Considering the types of games we've seen on the PS3 as of 2009...

I don't know about you guys, but this music instantly start playing in my head the moment I looked at the author's avatar pic.
shooter games in general. Ever since Halo dropped the bomb onto the world we've seen a ridiculous surge in shooter games that all star a muscle-bound action hero, complete with a dead stare and "no past to speak of" motto. The surge in shooters is so much so that it has become the american equivalent of the popularity of RPG's in Japan.
I mean, seriously, Halo is a good game, but come on guys.
Edit: I do have to applaud studios like Naughty Dog that finall...

On another note, this sure is an interesting stradegy. Taking a page from the approach Nintendo had for over 2 decades with the Game Boy brand, Microsoft is now launching a "tweaked" 360 with added functionality, but is not necessarily a next-gen console per say.
The possibilities of this strategy working, in my opinion are about 50-50. It will all depend on the core gamer response to this new console,as well as, whether or not the casual audience is willing to purchase...
ballmer must have been running all over the stage for this announcement...you know?
I'm noticing a trend here, and it seems that 95% of the rumors over the last few weeks have been dead accurate(even during the pre-E3 days).

there seems to be a few missing in the list of formula-changing platformers
Sonic the hedgehog- introduced speed and precision platforming(with momentum physics)
LBP- realistic, physics-based platforming(the gravity made the jumps a little more realistic, and thus, harder)
Loco Roco- platforming by tilting the world with the trigger buttons on the PSP
Kirby canvas curse- touch control platforming
