We may or may not be reaching the ceiling of gaming as we know it. But There comes a point where improvements are becoming less and less noticeable, and therefore less and less meaningful, at least gaming in the current form.
But the next step in gaming may take different forms. I used to think that VR/AR may be that next leap, but those of us who experienced the current VR tech would probably realise this form of VR may at best be a stepping point to another form.

Sony has the player base to support it’s games, unlike the xbox who decided to canibalize it’s own gaming market with gamepass.
Sony wouldn’t be dumb enough to give up it’s unique product proposition just for the trickle of sales from the minority of xbox only players that may or may not buy a ps game
