Well, it's all speculation, but I could see console makers going this route. Will GameStop become a World of Nintendo? I personally love getting deals on used games, so this potential news is kind of a bummer. I don't generally shop at GameStop, though...
Well, I feel like the comments relating specifically to the WiiU don't really contradict the other statements about the graphics not surpassing thePS3/360; he's just saying that they really want the controller integration to be special and not feel tacked on. I still think Nintendo could be playing the graphics capabilities close to the vest by not even telling 3rd party devs the final specs (because the 1st gen kits were supposed to be "port friendly" and then ramped up fro...
Yeah, I've seen some games/mods that look VERY lifelike. The most recent Crysis was very good, and there's a GTA3 mod that seems to be all texture/fx swaps that is gorgeous. Personally, I think we'll fast approach getting "near" lifelike graphics, using mostly tricks and lighting and design shortcuts, and that's fine; there will always be developers pushing those boundaries and others that move in the opposite direction, striving to create the UNreal. I feel like the...
Interesting. I could see a few announcements without any videos or screenshots, as that stuff will play better at E3. On the other hand, now might be a good time to reveal any new IPs or smaller titles that could potentially get buried under bigger franchises, come June. I'm craving any news, really. It's already been nearly 10 months since any real concrete info has been released.
I know. This isn't a story. There's zero information here... Obviously Nintendo are working on new IPs. They are always coming up with new stuff, whether people acknowledge it or not. I'm actually pretty excited about Pushmo, Dillon's Rolling Western, and Sakura Samurai on the 3DS. Those are 3 new mascot characters that could have a lot of life in them. And the Wii just got Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story, and Pandora's Tower, as far as very recent new IPs go... So yeah, ...
This article is fairly black and white; you buy one $60 game then throw the other $40 away? Or you're "forced" to spend it? First of all, game prices go down all the time. With so many sequels and "flops", now, games are often lowered to $20-30 within a few months of release. And game prices have remained steady for 25 years, with the recent $10 increase being a minor shift upwards that, even if it is a false inflation, is unlikely to happen again soon. Gamers will sto...
I don't think it will matter. IF the next Xbox doesn't have a disc drive and is download-only, GameStop would not be able to sell any games for the system in their stores, anyway, because they wouldn't exist... It would be very difficult to have an Xbox 720 display with nothing to stock in that section... Again, IF it happens, I don't know if it would hurt MS, at all. GameStop will have to change their business model eventually, though, because just like video rental chains, t...
Well, I agree that increasing development costs and longer cycles to turn around new games will certainly make the bigger publishers wary of taking risks, but I'm not sure that any of that is new to console gaming. How many of the same old platformers were gamers forced to play in the 16-bit days because that's what was popular? Digital distribution can certainly recreate a gaming dev "middle class" that seems to have been disappearing. And gamers will eventually tire of zer...
Well, the article was a bit less serious than I'd have thought, and it's certainly difficult to predict games based on having no previous information (most of Wii U's lineup, particularly in regard to first party titles...). I agree we will see a lot of Vita hype to move more units (maybe another Bioshock mention, even though no work has been done, yet...), and Kinect and Move will finally be seeing some hardcore titles, like Sorcery and the Fable spinoff. I bet we'll actually...
The author makes a fairly obvious point: finding a balance between the new and familiar in sequels is a difficult target to hit. Nintendo may be the best company to illustrate that point, given their penchant for cranking out new iterations in the same various series for decades. People particularly have been grumbling about Zelda, Mario, and Mario Kart, recently, with new titles in the last year that FEEL old; too much covering of old ground when fans who have grown up playing those games wa...
Jeez, the commentary descended into pointlessness rather quickly. Addressing the actual, you know, magazine cover in question, it looks like the kind of bait and switch that magazine (and comic book) covers have always used. It's probably a padded opinion piece featuring a few previews of already-announced games like Assassin's Creed, Darksiders 2, and Ninja Gaiden 3... You can list "the Price, The Tech, and Why it May Not Be Called the Wii U" on the cover, and then simply s...
This is a weird list of what seems like some real games that are coming out for other systems, along with made-up titles of a few Wii games. Red Steel 2: Locked and Reloaded? Seems sketchy.
Yeah, the author's sentiment about systems being successful if they made a "few" gamers happy is so true. I had friends with TG16s and Dreamcasts, and we always had a lot of fun times playing them. The hours I put into Crazy Taxi, alone, make the Dreamcast a worthwhile system, in my mind.
I love Kickstarter as a game funding tool. There are lots of creator that I would directly pay to see new product from. The flip side, however, is the inevitable glut of crap games seeking funding that no one will care about, which, while an annoyance, does seem like a problem that will take care of itself (projects that don't meet their funding goals disappear...). I just read about this millionaire lottery winner seeking a million to develop a game, even though he had no game-making exp...
I'm curious about the hype, primarily due to Epic Mickey's lack of blockbuster status. It had pretty good reviews, but wasn't a "smash", by any means. Nintendo power has a feature on whatever it is, next issue, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were multi-platform. I don't think we'll see actual WiiU shots since Nintendo has been keeping all of that stuff under wraps... We'll see.
The pod racing could actually be fun, but the story mode is too on-rails, and boy does the dancing not fit at all... It's obvious the game is casting a wide net for its audience (kids like sword fighting, moms like dancing!). The author of the article basically excuses hardcore gamers and Star Wars fans, outright, so apparently this game is for people who hate good videogames. I don't even think it would be that difficult to put together a "core" Rogue Squadron-type game on ...
3gengames brings up an interesting point. I don't know much about the history of this game, but I was looking up Super Fighter Team last week for another reason, and none of their games seem that great. This game on particular looks like every crappy action platformer from that era; nothing particularly original about the gameplay... I do think it's cool that these companies are releasing new carts with box art, and everything, but this game doesn't do much for me.
Addressing the actual article, regardless of what it actually costs, I wouldn't pay more than $300, I think. Sure, there are too many unknown factors to truly be able to say the system's perceived value, but unless the graphics seem like they'll be on par with the other upcoming next gen systems, then any higher in price would seem like a gouge. And is there a pack in game? What else are we seeing at launch and into the first year? I think the Wii U is going to be great, but Ninte...
Has Nintendo said how well they "expect" the system to sell? I think they're realists, business-wise, which is why they've been so successful, so I don't imagine they're having crazy expectations...
Yeah, anonymous developers leaking info to a website I've never heard of aren't exactly trustworthy, especially after hearing the impressions of Epic and Vigil and Crytek... Nintendo has purposefully been asking 3rd parties what they want, so I can't imagine nintendo going the total opposite direction. Regardless of graphics, I think they're shooting to be competitive, so easy to program for with a low price and perks for devs like free middleware. I don't think it will be...
