...is to say that that $280 million in LIVE subscription revenue is the equivalent of one Halo-sized game a year. Or about five million sellers.
How many game studios release 5 million-selling games every single year? EA? ActiBlizard? Ubisoft?
Peanuts it ain't.

The 60% number sounds about right, too, and explains why MS has been adding extra features to the Gold service of late; there's probably another 15% with broadband internet that aren't on Gold, so capturing...

But, you *do* realize there *is* a way and a *reason* to do a Blu-ray-less PS3, right? First thing to remember is there is a difference between the *Blu-ray movie* spec and the drives which are technically BD-ROM drives.

Sony *can* do this:
1- Keep the drive itself because, yes, it is indispensable for games
2- Take out the Blu-ray movie playback software. And the Wi-Fi and Gigabit, while they're at it. In other words, make a purposefully gimped PS3 with no upgrad...

You do realize MS (and Google) lobby *for* net neutrality?

Net neutrality is about Comcast and telcos capping/limiting/restricting user access to net-delivered services (like LIVE) in favor of their own (or partner) services.

And if you don't hook up your 360 (if you even have one) to the net because of not wanting to pay for Gold level services, you are sadly misinformed and depriving yourself of a major part of the value of owning a 360; XBOX Live Silver is *fr...

Anybody actually read yesterday's announcement from MS?
They clearly stated the 1400 job cuts they are implementing now are in "sales, marketing, HR", etc.
Nobody from product design, development, or support is moving out.
Well, guess what?
MS has been bookeeping *all* their consumer advertising personnel and budget (for Windows, Server, Zune, Xbox, everything) under the E&D budget. So yes, if they cut back personnel in those *functions* it follows th...

It is never a good thing for corporate mouthpieces to use words like "lie", "fabrication", or "stupid".
So they go with "inaccurate" which is more polite. :-)
(Do a replace and you'll see what they mean, though.)

People, how hard is it to understand?
1- Bioware developed Mass Effect while under a contract with Microsoft.
2- Microsoft holds the publishing rights to Mass Effect and (likely but unconfirmed) its tw...

Like some legal nudging from Ubisoft?
Halo3: Recon infringing on Ghost Recon?

On the other hand if they establish ODST as a brand, it may be we'll see ODST games without Halo attached to the name...

Marketing and branding is an odd business.
Anybody remember the grumbling about Nintendo going from Revolution to Wii?

Well, the first thing any 360 owner should do is download all the XBLA demos. Easier to see for yourself what appeals to you.
But a few unusual games you might want to check out are:

- Penny Arcade Adventures (old school adventure gaming brought up to the new century)
- Catan, Carcassone, Uno
- Cloning Clyde

Loderunner is coming in the next month or so...

DVD-based games that might get overlooked (yeah, everybody knows about Ge...

Not only are they missing a couple of big sellers, some of those numbers look low. Like Mass Effect hit 2.1 million *last* XMAS. Arewe to believe its sold nothing since then? Even though its currently running under $30?
But it gets worse, those are just disk-based sales.
So far, MS has sold over a Billion bucks worth of downloadable content via Live. And they've just about tripled the number of Movies on VM in two years, added TV content from pretty much every network, and now N...

...the video is just showing the ability to scan or "browse" all your games in a single list. Which the 360 has always had.
*if* the 360 were to get a local browser (it already has one via the Media Center Extender, guys) it would be listed under Internet not under browse.
Major, major waste of bandwidth, children...

The way I heard it, MS Hard Drives have unique serial numbers assigned; this hack simply copies over *one* number that conforms to whatever algorithm MS uses to cook up the numbers.
All MS would have to do is render that specific number invalid and you're driveless and all your data unaccessible.
Maybe I heard wrong, but...

The reason the Arcade can be had at those prices is partly because of the pricing of the drives and accessories; its a package de...

One more time, Sony-boys:

360 Arcade *can* work with live just fine.
PS3 fans talk of value but conveniently forget that the $199 Arcade is not just a box but a complete gaming package: controller, memory card, and 5 games. If all you want is to play games, which is what consoles are for, Arcade is all you need.

Ditto for the Wii; the $80 Wii fit is no more a mandatory requirement for gameplay than a hard drive is.

For a guy who claims to ow...

Bioware is on record stating quite clearly they see themselves as in the business of creating games, not *porting* them. That is why they farmed out Mass Effect for PC. They want to focus on getting the game out on whatever platform it is targetted for. From their point of view, Dragon Age is done once its running on PC. If EA wants to do a version for consoles, that is up to EA.

It is not a commentary on anybody's favorite object of worship if they consider themselves primaril...

"Update 12:05 p.m.: Finally, maybe the loudest applause of the day was for the announcement by Square Enix that it's much-anticipated Final Fantasy XIII will be coming out exclusively on the Xbox 360, though there was no specific date announced."

That is surely a misprint, right?

The bad blood thing is mostly in the fanboys' minds--both companies are in it for the money--but it is not *just* a fanboy thing.
There really is a (little) bit of disdain involved.
The "rivalry" dates back to 1999 and the Dreamcast (if not the 3DO days); many of the XBOX Division employees worked first on 3DO and later on Dreamcast. A lot of them still harbor ill-feelings towards Sony for the way they FUD'ed Dreamcast out of the market with vapor and hype. They made ...
