Translation: animated movie.
*Not* a game.
So yes, Akira in HD is news.
And the various series from ADV that are coming is also news (of the good variety).
Lotsa folks eager for this.
As oxymoronic as that may sound.
Sony only supported mandatory copy *after* the war was in effect and HP defected and Dell started making noises. (Dell is now neutral.)
Their original position was that allowing consumers to copy and stream content was optional, on a title by title basis, and *extra cost*. Still is extra cost. That's why no shipping disks support it.
HD-DVD required it from day one.
Minor detail, since nobobody has implemented it yet.
...
1- MS started out *neutral* in this war because *both* formats depend on their HD Codec, VC-1 (although BD support was literally over Sony's objections; after VC-1 was approved, Sony insisted H.264 be included even though there were no mastering tools.).
2- After the Codecs were selected, MS offered up an interactivity scripting engine and Sony, in a huff, chose to block it and insisted on a Java-based interactivity engine that wasn't even defined. That led to a six month delay...
Remember, last week there was a report that the 360 Elite by itself was outselling the PS3 at Amazon.
So there have been hints that adding Elite was a plus for 360 sales.
In fact, the amazon numbers had all three 360 SKUs individually out-selling PS3. So *if* (big if) these estimates prove true they shouldn't a total shock.
The trends have been there all spring.
Nothing wrong than hitching a ride on the reigning king of RPGs.
Only thing is, the dragon in the trailer on live makes me think more of Spyro than a real one. Their monster design sense is just a bit off.
Not everybody drools at the sight of another warmed over 90's 2-d kick-n-punch retread from Japan. MS is going out of their way to get some games into arcade that will appeal to people born before the PS1 was released. And that's a good thing.
CATAN is a very fun game; more like it will be *highly* welcome.
Carcasonne will be a great addition to the catalog.
If the rumors are true and they'll be adding Puerto Rico, too, even better.
Not every games has to be about ...
...since the last dashboard update.
That's a step in the right direction.
I hear it plays most iTunes videos straight without conversion.
FWIW.
FAT was pre-MSDOS 5 and doesn't support long file names, etc.
FAT32 is what it widely used today in flashcards and USB devices of all sorts. Different creatures.
ANY commercial USB external drive that you buy will be pre-formatted in FAT32 so anything will work on 360 that way.
And for those that are not aware, since this article seems to be news to some: the 360 *will* play music, photos, and video off data CDs and DVDs. Just burn your own and away you go.
No PC s...
PS3 is not really home theater friendly because of the bluetooth remote. The pure BD player has a proper infrared remote so its compatible with universal remotes and home theater setups.
There is room for both.
It is common knowledge the 360 supports external drives since launch. What this "new" article fails to point out is the 360 won't write to the external drive; it treats it as a read-only drive.
Oh, and the drive needs to be formatted as FAT32. (Nothing uses FAT anymore, not even floppies.)
And a good start at drawing in a bigger audience to the Video Marketplace. And Anime is actually popular with fems. You know, the *other* half of the species, kids? ;-)
More money in that than in most of the other stuff they'll be carrying, too.
More money and better demographics=good news.

I agree they could use more of (above-listed categories). They do have some in each category, just not enough.
What category is lacking?
Art-house?
Romantic comedies?
Foreign?
Straight dramas?
They do have some new partners that are starting to digitize content...
The local NBC station horribly mangled the HD feed about half the time this winter. When I consider how good Enterprise HD and even Babylon5 in SD look on marketplace...
By now I'll just have to wait for the (exclusive) HD-DVD release on August 28.
As for IPTV, what that will do is drive home just how poor is the video quality of both satellite and the cable services. The original stuff is HD-DVD quality! So why can't they deliver at least DVD quality video?

Lists all the insults Sony has heaped upon them, rather politely, in fact. Most of the complaints are stuff we're familiar with, but some are surprising.
It seem some of those folks actually bought PSX'es!!!
I thought those died a quiet death in Japan... :-o
If Sony unloaded that junk on europeans, after it failed to sell in japan, they deserve everything they get.
Nobody enjoys being treated like dirt...
They're doing a handful of new movies each week; a mixture of recent and older films. They are being careful not to flood the catalog so they don't fragment the audience to where no movie makes enough to justify its availability on the service.
Need to remember, guys, that the studios are "customers" of this service so this report is important; it indicates they are satisfied with the extra revenue. And if the studios are satisfied, they'll offer more movies and more of the b...
The 360 was supply-constrained over the first six months and PS3 wasn't.
That tells you demand was higher.
Look at the inflection points in the curves and you'll see when 360 became broadly available and when holiday sales took off.
The latter being shortly after PS3 arrived. :-)
Factor in Japan's XBOX-phobia and clearly Sony is not doing as well as 360, much less Nintendo.
Sony: cut prices now.
No amount of paid-for "Sony Protection" faux f...
Take a closer look, will you?
The Surface table is using Vision technology for shape and motion recognition; the iPhone uses a touch panel instead of a mouse.
Very different techs and very different uses.
Harrahs and Sheraton et all wouldn't pay $10K per unit if a $600 phone were any use to them.
Watch the video, why don'cha?

Because its not japanese.
What else is there to wonder about?
They don't buy gaijin stuff if they can help it and as long as Nintendo is in business they're covered.
Long term its a good thing for the gaming world if they ghetto-ize themselves, anyway.
There's room for more than one vision of gaming, anyway...
