Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.
NPCs and Villains had Fear and could Panic. It was not uncommon to see opponents drp their weapons and run for their lives in a total blind panic under a variety of conditions. The easiest to achieve is through invisible attacks. Just as in Oblivion, Invisibility in Morrowind ends when you manipulate an object or attack somebody. Unlike Oblivion, you can have a constant effect invisibility enchantment on an object and you can have a low level constant effect...

1- MS chose to go first, and the show runs a couple days before the June sales numbers go public, so they will very likely be announcing a price cut on the Core. Maybe the Premium....

2- IPTV, the timing is about right for an update

3- Rare will contributing a few XBLA games and Banjo Kazooie; maybe a new IP

4- Fable 2 update

5- HaloWars update

6- Alan wake update

7- Crimson Skies sequel

Sony was hyping the PS2 and sayng it was going to be more of a home computer than a console; that it would displace PCs from homes the world over, that it would kill PC-based gaming...
(Sound familiar?)
MS got concerned and tried to develop a standard low-end PC gaming platform (cica 1999) but neither Dell nor Compaq nor Gateway was interested so MS was forced to do XBOX.
Not having learned from this, this time around, Sony's been talking up CELL as a replacement for X86 ...

Is there any reason to believe GTA IV on 360 *won't* sell 3-4 million? Out of installed base of 16M?
MS gets $12-15 off each DVD and $4 per DL.

Do the math: They'll get their $50M back by next march. And that assumes GTAIV *doesn't* draw any console sales.

In case anybody hadn't noticed, this current gen of games is *expensive* to develop and promote; Lost planet cost $40M but has generated $100M+ gross.
Getting into Hollywood movie territory...

Exactly to the point; what ships on DVD is the finished game as originally planned.
A lot of what ships *after* that, as DLC is an extension of the gaming experience.
Only, instead of having to wait for a new version of the game (at full cost) you get to add on for a fraction.
Best example of this is Oblivion which (horse armor aside) kept adding value for $2-3 a pop for six months after release. And then added *two* major expansions, giving the game added appeal even a y...

There is a looonnnggg tradition in this industry of following up successful games with added content. In the old days, you had to go to a store and buy floppies or CDs to get the extensions (Think of Tribunal and Bloodmoon for Morrowind) that are now available via download (think Shivering Isles for Oblivion) so you get them quicker and more conveniently and you don't have to insert multiple key disks to play. *They* get more sales because there is no used disk to pass along.
If you do...

The game is all new but it is basically a *larger*, more elaborate version of the previous games in the series.
Same basic mechanics and character designs.
Better graphics (of course), more collectible items (3x+), more rewards, more "cousins" to play, plus online competitive (versus) and local coop play modes.

Its a welcome addition to the 36's family-friendly game lineup.

What part of "The Grand Theft Auto IV episodic content is exclusive to Xbox 360." is unclear?
"Exclusive to 360" means no other system gets it.
They said so at E3 last year and they've said it repeatedly since. MS is paying for the development of the exclusive content to keep it off other platforms.
(You don't think Moore would get a tatoo for anything less, do you? ;-) )

Gotta problem? Take it up with Rockstar for doing work for hire.

You haven't seen the downloadable in-game videos on XBOX Live, have you? When you're exploring/fighting, the camera runs above and behind the character.
But when you're in conversation/interaction with other characters, the cameras move around in a very movie-like fashion from one character to the next so you get to see your character from all angles.

No spam involved.
In fact, a lot of fans were scratching their heads and wondering why they *hadn't* gotten the email.
Its an invitation to play a game.
Anybody who wants to can play, those that don't can go back to watching movies.

For starters, its expected by now.
Both halo and Halo 2 were preceded by ARG campaigns and one is expected to be part of the festivities. Its one of the things that distinguishes Halo from other shooters; the attention paid to the backstory and the drawing in of the players into the mythology. Those that dismiss Halo as Yet-Another-Shooter miss the point of the game; it is an entry point into an interesting SF universe. The novels and ARGs are alternate entry points; so will the movie,...

A total Sony implosion is no longer a pipe dream but a very real possibility. And when you consider the amount of money third-party developers have been investing in PS3 game development the whole industry could get disrupted. Companies might go under, people losing the jobs, their livelihoods, EA buying more developers and IP, cats mating with dogs... (okay, maybe not the latter...)

Not really the end of the world but certainly a major disruption.

The good news ...

Not all surprises are good. ;-)

As is, it *is* surprising that PS3 seems headed for a (gulp!) *third* straight month of declining sub-100k sales.
Wasn't that some kind of trigger point?

Semi-conductor products drop in price over time in three ways:

1- yields increase and cost drops as the manufacturer gains experience manufacturing the product; the more units you make, the more you know about how to make it cheaper
2- over time, the product is redesigned and moved to different manufacturing processes that produce more units per wafer reducing the per-wafer cost
3- as products become more widely used, the various fixed costs in the manufacturing p...
