The real question though is what for: the 360 sees external drives as read-only devices.
You can play music, photos and videos of USB drives of all kinds (from thumbdrives to HDDs) but you can't *write* to them.
Yet.
MS knows it is at the top of most folks wishlists.
For now, saved games and downloads can only reside on memory cards or the sidecar HDD.
Which is why they're reconfiguring the Premium to the 120Gb HDD (at $399) after the Elite Limited edition ...
"Its just the French! What do they know!" ;-)
They like Citroens and Jerry Lewis!
Do you mean the "fictional" version 1.2 Oblivion patch that was released last night over XBOX Live and that I played on for two hours yesterday?
That "fictional" patch?
...to sell the PS3 to a fanboy and buy a black 360 and a Wii.
...its two.
The Elite in Black is a temporary (2-3 months) stunt for those that whine about black being Kewler than white. *Those* can pay $80 for the privilege of a Black Box. Once the batch of black boxes is gone, the 20GB package goes away and the new *white* premium will have the 120Gb drive and the HDMI.
Bottom line; a phased transition from 20Gb to 120Gb.
And if you *really* care about the drive, you can buy the 120Gb drive separately, which a data transfer cable (a...
My Box still does everything it did when I got it.
And if I ever need a bigger HD (not yet, but maybe some day) there will be one.
Even if it cost less than I paid (which it won't, it will cost *more*) I've been beating the crap out of mine for a whole year.
What's the big deal? Why should any existing owner feel slighted?
That its "kewl" black?
Feh!
B.F.D.!!!
Think about it: two days before the Euro launch, MS hijacks two prominent Playstation franchises *and* word firms up about the black 360?
Its FUD, plain and simple, for massive damage to the giant crab.
Bare knuckles time...
...cause you don't counter vaporware.
Home isn't even in beta.
Besides, MS still hasn't fired their best shot: XNA Express Marketplace (or whatever they end up calling it).
The Sony boys haven't caught up yet to the fact that MS is hijacking the *next* generation of game developers *before* they leave University.
Its all about the games, children; not glorified chat rooms.
BusinessWeek and Gamespot have different ideas:

If MS were to buy them, they would've done it last year *before* GTA4 was an...
...when it was Sony paying people to keep the games off XBOX nobody squawked.
Now that MS is getting the exclusives, *now* they play the MS is evil, money-grubbing card.
Cry me a river fanboys!
Any PS3 game coming in 07 will have to make its profits off an installed base of 4-6 million, being generous. The bigger the game, the more expensive to develop and the bigger the target audience needs to be. Simple math.
Anybody notice that the remaining 3rd party Sony exclusives are all 08 games? (In other words, they're aiming at the *projected* 08 installed base. All the games coming this year have already jumped.)
Or that when the previously-exclusive PS3 ga...
Except for GTA4 all those are being published by Microsoft Game Studios as 360 exclusives. That's why BioShock, C&C and the *other* blockbusters to come aren't listed.
Those are merely the (expected) multimillion sellers that will remain exclusive to 360 no matter what.
Only one problem with that list.
Halo in Sept?
I thought it was November...
List could use some tweaking.
But it still makes the point the 360 is on...
Its just speculation and reading tea leaves.
Gotta have something to do while we wait for Shivering Isles to be released. :-)
...just the 20Gb (current) premium...
...To make room for the enhanced Premium.
Anybody that wants a 20Gb 360 gets the Core + the 20Gb drive.
those that want the big drive with the extra features gets the *new* premium.
Or maybe they really have PS3 on the brain like their fans.
Dunno. Me, I'd prefer to squash Nintendo now. Sony knows to squash themselves just fine. They don't need microsoft's help for that. ;-)
One, if you read the article carefully it becomes clear MS has quietly cut the wholesale price of the Premium 360 without mandating a retail price cut. This is the kind of thing you do when you're phasing out a product. Makes me think it is the 20Gb Premium that is going away, *not* the Core.
Two, discontinuing the core is really a stupid thing to do. It is Sony-centric thinking. Stop and think guys: its March 2007, not March 2009. Right now, PS3 is no threat to 360. The real t...
You guys ever hear of "right of first refusal" clauses?
It means than when you sign a contract for something like a movie or a game, the publisher buys the right to publish the original and any derivatives (sequels, remakes, spinoffs, etc) or *at a minimum* gets first crack at such. It cannot be offered to anybody else until the publisher declines the derivative.
Now, some "exclusive" contracts feature time limitations (VF5 for example) that a...
You're obviously unaware that GOW is published by MGS.
Hint: MGS = Microsoft Game Studios.
Epic did the design and coding but MS controls Gears lock, stock, and barrel.
You'll see gears on a Playstation about six months after MS buys Sony. :-)
In other words: never, ever, never.
"Move along, move along, nothing to see here..."
They're assuming PS3 buyers care about the quality of online game play.
That's a big if.
Evidence suggests the PS3 fans aren't all that discriminating.
Neither are the Nintendo fans.
Lack of online sure isn't hurting the wee Wii, is it?
It takes all kinds.
Or, as Ian Fleming said: "Live and let die."
...buying a PS3. Or PS2, for that matter.
Shoulda stayed with the PS1 he got when he was 5 in the first place.
Anti-social cheapskate whiner! ;-)
...and elaborated on the report from GI.
They pointed out that the Premium would get the bigger drive and the HDMI at $399 when the Elites run out.
