@Animal Mutha 76 "Nothing to worry about."

Why did this guy just spring to mind after so many years?

You say the machines are way too similar, but as time goes on it's likely to seem less and less that way.

This SKU is obviously not for those interested in PS+, it's a bargain unit to appeal to parents who want value in a games machine for their kids. It also appeals to those who might want to buy the cheapest unit possible in order to install a huge HDD.

I'm not sure you can whip a HDD out of one ps3 and stick it in another, you might have to back it up, format it, insert into new machine and restore - could be wrong but it's part of the protection system iirc.

@--Onilink-- "12gb is absurd in this digital age."

Actually it's not absurd. This SKU isn't for those who will be downloading games from PSN and watching downloaded movies/tv on it, it's a cheap offline option to appeal to those on a budget and those who don't want online functionality.

I bought my nephews the 12GB ps3 last xmas and as online gaming and downloads isn't something they'll ever do with a ps3 (they are 5 and 6) a...

@No_Limit "For me, I can care less if the PS4 sells more than the XB1"

What you care about is irrelevant - it's Microsoft that we're discussing. They care if they're going to sell 4 or 5 times less units than ps4 at launch, especially when they previously said they're weren't aiming to sell 80m units this time but 400m to one billion. Those numbers seem a long way off right now.

Often it's not so much what you do but how you do it that matters to people. And when it comes to money and customers feeling at ease with a company, even more so.

Sony lubed up the ps fanbase with the excellent ps+, offering value and opening people's eyes to games they would otherwise never have considered (which publishers loved btw). Them continuing to pay out to play online with ps4 for a service most hardcore ps fans already consider essential and utterly bonker...

Yes, all the changes result in a better games console than the one they announced for the potential consumer, but at the end of the day it's still not better enough to make many people rethink their decision to steer clear of the One after the initial outcry. It also begs the question "why didn't you offer all this to begin with?".

Also, there still 100 reasons why it's not even on a par with ps4, in US currency at least. And there's that camera many...

Had to laugh there, nicely put.

@jimsas Look at the chart at the bottom of my blog, figures are 2 weeks old but they're about the only pre-order stats anyone has to work with:

@Bigpappy "Why send thousands of consoles to Japan"

Sending consoles to Japan was never in their plans. The issue is the reasoning behind reducing a 21-country launch to a 13-country launch.

That could be manufacturing issues leading to less stock than anticipated, or it could be a decision to try to flood markets where they know they have a better chance to sell units, or it could be a combination of these and /or something else entirely.

@ edonus

That's one way to spin it, but when you consider their plans only a couple of months ago were to be launching in 21 regions then had to cut that back to 13, the only reason that makes sense realistically is a production issue or some other problem that resulted in them being unable to produce the number they required to support all 21 territories.

But maybe you are right, maybe they decided concentrating on attempting to redress the availability...

@jackanderson1985 "Sony also hasn't mentioned which countries it's launching in so these ones could also be skipped over by Sony"

All you need to do is go to Sony Europe's version of their PS4 site in each of the regions and see if you can pre-order the machine for 2013, then you'll have some kind of picture of where it will be launched (I've done this). Of course it's no guarantee, but a good indicator I believe.

Countries l...

@FanOfRootBeer "On the topic of Sony being an enormous company: Sony's gaming divisions are basically separate from other sectors"

Yes, but as the presentation at E3 showed, where it makes sense to do so Sony plans to bring a lot of its business together in future, to benefit the company as a whole.

So does plugging your cable box directly into your TV, making use of that often overlooked little black box called the TV remote. Just sayin'

@No_Limit "walla"

lol

OT: It's not going to be as simple as creating an account in another region with the One - as One fans keep pointing: it's way more than a games console... maybe a Swedish xbox one importer isn't going to be too impressed when all the non-gaming content (TV, fantasy sports, pizza ordering etc). is in German and targeted to Germans... delivery on those pizzas alone would cost more than a game download.

They also spent a lot of money designing and implementing the system that handled DRM and that got canned. Sure, that's not in the same league as their camera, but when something is working against your goals you do what needs to be done.

The games division is effectively under new management now, don't be surprised to see this and other changes as they scramble to become relevant again.

Agreed. When people see the One now works even if you leave the Kinect in the box, how many will wait it out for a Kinect-less SKU? It could do more harm than good.

By allowing the unit to function without Kinect they might be forcing their own hand.
