There was a lot of negative buzz about Star Fox Zero from visuals to lack of enemies and even the controls.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Nintendo is reacting to that and pulling veteran developers to rework portions of the game. Nintendo as of late has been very reactive to fan feedback.
Sounds likely, Sony could always do $369.99 too it doesn't have to be in $50 intervals. They still get an uptick in sales.

It's more likely that Nintendo is concerned with future Mario titles having levels people claim they created because it's similar.
The same good idea is often thought of by multiple people separately. It's the same reason movie studios won't accept unsolicited scripts.

I'm not generally a specs guy but I think Nintendo does need to compete in this arena. Time and time again we see technical debates rise to the top of interest (this site and others).
