The Chinese government doesn't seem to have a relationship with Microsoft. But given the news that Microsoft is being investigated for anti -trust for Windows we will get to see if they do or not. Since they seem to own 95% of the OS market in China, this seems like a easy case. But if nothing comes of it but an insignificant fine and Sony runs into supply and other issues, then the relationship is stronger than it appears on the surface.

It's amazing that so many people that seem to mill around on this sight all day have so little knowledge about howmoney is actually made in gaming. Anyone that thinks microsoft isn't making money should have their heads examined. And as far as gaming not being important to Microsoft please explain to me why they set aside 1 billion each for gaming and a entertainment studio to support their gaming console. On top of the salaries they spent on bringing heavy hitter talent to the studio...

The real stupidity is that they seem to be completely unaware that Sony will be soon entering that same market. More like dead brain rabbits.

EA is part of the problem along with the leagues. The leagues are greedy. But it is EA that then sat on their asses and stopped making any attempts at innovation. While they have done some things, they still have yet to compete with 2K in football. If 2K was still making football games now the bar would have been raised ten notches by now.They have done better on FIFA but only because they still have a viable competitor.

Sony is selling through a different company. But I think you're a little behind on your Chinese news. There are more and more zones in China that are capitalistic. China has one of the fastest growing middleclass sections in the world and already has more middleclass than the U.S. has people. You seem to be ignoring that the Chinese government will control everything anyway. At least if they are on your side most likely they will see to it that your product has fewer problems. It's like having the Mob running the docks at a major port. As long as you keep them happy they will see to it you have no issues. Sony and Nintendo have to keep them happy and won't be giving them as much money. It's in the Chinese government's interest to see ...

I doubt Microsoft received anything in this deal. In fact, I would bet they had to pay. Governments don't pay you to introduce you to their market. It's an advantage for you to have them in a closed society.

I no longer have a gaming PC. But I will never be under the illusion that consoles are more powerful. I believe Sony will be selling there. Not sure about Nintendo. But the seeming government support for Microsoft is a little scary for other console makers. China may be slowly opening up, but the government obviously has a huge amount of influence over what does and doesn't succeed. The Chinese middleclass is larger than the entire U.S. population. The author is just plain wrong. It's funny that while some go on and on about Microsoft closing their studio is great for gamers, none seem to think it is an issue for Sony. Sure Sony has a long history of creating movies and TV, but Microsoft is in a far better position to support a TV division. Well Sony TV does great. But Sony Pictures is a mixed bag. Sony could not make a decision today to set aside a billion dollars for any of their divisions. Let alone two as Microsoft did.

This debate about whether or not Microsoft is committed to gaming goes beyond silly. It's plain stupid. When they set aside one billion dollars as an initial investment strictly for games they ended any legitimate speculation. The only debate left on the matter could only occur in the dysfunctional mind of a fanboy.

The reality is gamers are the problem. They seem to believe the world revolves around them. They think that in a field with ever increasing budgets each generation, consoles will survive as a one trick pony. Realistically, gaming consoles need to expand into more encompassing entertainment devices in order to survive. Two, their programming would have been geared towards the very group advertisers crave.
