Demonstrate fluid cross-play between platforms, peripherals, show same content available/usable on one and the other, pop a disc in either they both work (each uses it to the best of its ability), your downloadables are available on all your devices, I think society is actually totally ready for this finally. Smart phones started it off and have succeeded in part because of this. My oldest iPhone apps still work on my newest Apple device. Many newer titles still work on the older Apple device...
Why would we have to wait longer?
I think both sides could easily do this. Especially as it is still early in the cycle. Keep price point around 400-450, ability to improved performance on older titles (obviously it has to play everything that has already come out, with 4K available on new titles.

Yes, companions could have used much more work. The game is good, but they didn't do anything brilliant with this one. AI needs to be much more, "controllable" and tactical and easily commandable.

One difference between THIS required component is that it does have alternative functionality, so it isn't like its ONLY purpose is for VR, it can do tons of other stuff.
Of course if you only care about the VR use, then that doesn't matter, but it is worth noting.
That's the problem, it ISN't going anywhere. Lost market share since last gen big time. And last gen they gained for maybe three reasons, which were Sony's own fault, not Microsoft being a better choice for consumers. Gamers are impatient, so first console out, they go for. Gamers are often cheap when it comes to the console price, but more loose with money when it comes to games they like, Micro won again there. Micro has to come up with some winning ideas if they want to take on...
If they pushed every single aspect of the visuals of ALL those games for current-gen hardware. Maybe, but they will likely be lazy azzes.

Call of Duty already killed itself. It can be as "popular" as all hell, but what really died (and long ago) was the QUALITY game that it was. I myself confused its being popular and persisting, with it being a "good," or outstanding product.
As far as another game taking the sales throne, I couldn't care less, as long as the game is great and there are enough people playing it (if the focus is multiplayer) to keep it going for a good while.

I believe the increased complexity in the many other aspects of game development, i.e. visual effects, animations, dynamic environments (even dynamic gameplay elements), as well as many gameplay innovations are taking a far larger toll on dev times than a jump in resolution. Either the hardware can handle it or not. Every dev has to work on optimization, but those other factors are where I believe the meat of their time is spent.
