This was I think the safest way Konami could get in the fans' good graces after all these years with Metal Gear.

Kind of! There was another Suicide Squad that was less GaaS/more one and done Co-Op built by Montreal, right after Origins (If you recall in that game, Slade was getting recruited to the SS at the end). And once that got axed, Rocksteady started working on a new iteration.
Gotham Knights had the DNA of what that original Suicide Squad was. A lot of the codebase is inherited.
They only discuss the hardware aspects without mentioning the market share or game library. The Xbox Series X is a great console based on hardware alone (And One X also was) and could possibly be the last from Microsoft. However, when compared to their competition, the game library is a different story.

I'd like to believe Joel's situation is more about turning into a calloused survivor in a cold-hard world who may have made selfish decisions. Not inherently ruthless.
As a dev, I can tell you that with 5, Epic made quite a leap. It perhaps may have done *too much* of a fidelity leap that most of its target hardware (Both PC and Consoles) struggles to hit 60FPS with all the new cutting edge features they added.
It may have had some issues with this generation to find a good home, but by PS6 the engine will have matured and found a good matching partner 🙏
Just some people who didn't like that the story was split between 3 protagonists and kinda had weird pacing because of it.
Baldur's Gate 3 formula. The world isn't that big but so much interaction is happening almost across every level. Fill it up.
Games don't have to be fully open world. Large levels filled with interactivity are just fine.

Sadly, Steam Charts are a great indicator of health. GaaS will always suffer unless you have a dedicated team the size of Bungie.
