They're trying to gain more consumers in those territories, where the PS3 is killing them. Increasing the price there will just continue to kill their base there. Only in North America will this price hike remain largely uncontested.

But it's more likely that Sony would disable specific aspects of the USB ports, not the total functionality of it. They could disable the transfer of information, or only allow specific types of information to be transfered (i.e. music, let's see hackers find a way to make the PS3 think a 50GB game is an mp3).
I have an original 60GB Phat PS3. And speaking as an owner of said PS3, I can tell you two things. First, I DID NOT pay for Linux. Second, losing it has had absolutely NO effect on my ability to play games. I wonder if you, or the other whiners on the PS3 hate bandwagon can actually tell me the cost of the Other OS feature as it was added in the price of a PS3. Maybe I can ask Sony for my 5 cents back?
