The difference betweeen DX and OpenGL is very small these days. Besides, Sony has a lot of expertise in this field, and they offer all developers support with porting to OpenGL, aswell as provide them with tools.

What you dont get is that AMD use a lot more instructions per FLOP than they did in 2009. The 2.7TFLOPS in a 5870 is not the same as 2.7TFLOPS in current AMD GPUs. 2.7 AMD TFLOPS in 2009 was around 1TFLOP Nvidia FLOPS. While a 1.8TFLOP AMD GPU today is around 1.5TFLOP Nvidia FLOPS.
That is why Nvidia is worth comparing to, since their amount of instruction per FLOP has stayed somewhat constant.
in that case Nvidia and AMD measure FLOPS differently, considdering 285GTX was about 10-15% weaker than a 5870 and has 1TFLOP.
EDIT: Upon further googling, AMD did have a very different amount of instructions per FLOP back in the days, which meant nvidia flops were not the same as amd flops, but they now have a very equal amount of instructions per FLOP. Therfore 1.8TFLOP PS4 GPU is in the ballpark of a 580 GTX, far beyond any 2009 GPU.
Your 2009 GPU will not compete with the PS4. The PS4 gpu sits on 1.8TFLOPS, which is a little higher than a 580GTX. There are on the other hand lots of PC GPU's that smokes 1.8TFLOPS, but no 2009 GPU will.

Customized hardware like this will indeed increase longevity, and will benefit the platform. It will not however allow it to compete with high-end PC's in any shape or form, since the sheer amount of computing power is just several times higher.
People who think this benefits the PS4 are wrong. These DRM systems are bad for all gamers, and nobody would want MS to go that route, because that might allow Sony or Nintendo to follow in the next generation.
I thought the same thing when they revealed it, but the later videoes has rekindled my faith in it. It looks much more like a multiplayer Skyrim, than a regular MMO. First person view, having to actually hit you mouse to strik, having to time blocks and dodging etc.

the CPU is clocked a lot lower than on the PS3, so that helps a lot with heat aswell. Coupled with a smaller die size.
I wish they cost a lot more, so that they could include more future-proof hardware.
