It does not open any gate for anyone except Fortnite. At least not yet. Sony is conducting a beta of cross play for one game and one game only. Fortnite. Anything outside of that is just speculation.

I doubt very seriously that the "pressure" on this came from the PS4 community. This was about Fortnite and all the many dollars going into that game. It isn't like Sony was seeing a mass exodus of gamers to Xbox and Switch over this.

Ultimately this was a business decision. Ben Kuchera got that much right. Fortnite is a powerful beast. If it were not for the influence of that one game, we would not be talking about this right now.
Whether this cross play makes it way over to the handful of other games that have cross console platform play like on Xbox and Switch....we will see. This announcement was only about Fortnite.

DF very well will "expose" what is what. But you have ask yourself, if you have to have DF tell you which is native and which is checkerboard then then does the difference really matter? Ultimately, getting to 60 FPS is what really matters.
