By installing "common data" onto the HD LO would be down to 2 or 3 disks rather than 4. How do you know this? So you are saying they would have to install a whole disks worth of data onto the HD?

MS made a conscious choice to split their base, regardless of how many people own or don't own a HD, they still have some customers who might not and they need taking care of. If MS didn't want this problem they should have included it from the start, the genie is out of the bottle now and they have to deal with it.

Console gamers choose consoles for stability and reliability. Consoles should have everything needed for the long term out of the box, it shouldn't be a matter of if you want a HD or not, if games are going to require and HD to do anything on a console the console should include one, the only question should be how much HD space you want.

I would say that this is the natural progression, cartridges to CD-ROM to DVD to BLU-RAY (Could have been HD-DVD too if MS hadn't wanted to jump the gun). I don't see this story going away, I only see Kojima as the first of a potentially growing chorus of devs saying that more space is required.

Kojima has been working on hardware for a long time and until he comes out and says that they did a bad job at compressing the game or something I think Kojima holds a bit more credibility than you as to what compression techniques are appropriate.
You don't even know the full extent of the game, i.e. the camo system in the game has 300 different textures alone, textures take up a lot of room and we still haven't been shown everything that will be included in the game.
