Yeah, I meant that as in, games based on real-life combat zones, rather than the futuristic warfare of today's games.
I always thought Linkin Park’s music video for Breaking The Habit would have made a cool manga/anime adaption, and I suppose a game too, now that you mention it. A lot of their music shouldn’t have even been put on an album though, let alone a game.
Never really understood why people complain about delays. You'll get the damn game when it's done. Surely you want it to be released without any problems cropping up. Sometimes I feel for the industry, they're doomed if they do, and doomed if they don't.
I've been saying this for a long time. WWI would make a great setting, and take the genre back to its roots. There's also a lot of room for creative license, and innovative multiplayer.
So am I. The gameplay footage for it looks amazing imo.
Personally, I still love Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. The combat felt authentic, and you had to think tactically about things. I'm not sure the same can be said about today's First Person War Sims.
Luck based elements are always horrible in games, but I suppose they slot in somehow. I just think about games like XCOM where one case of bad luck can pretty much lead to an all-out failure. I’m not sure how well at Puzzle Quest style game will do on PS4 either…
The fact that kids these days have YouTube walkthroughs, lets play videos, and a whole bunch of forums etc. makes the games they play far less mysterious in my opinion. I remember when tips and tricks were passed on from buddy to buddy, back in the street, where real gamers played. Kids these days with their gaming chairs will never understand what it was like to sit on your parent's garden wall and trade Pokemon etc. They've got it easy!
I’m seriously considering getting a WiiU, even if it’s a second hand console. There’s a load of games that I really want to play right now.
Let's just hope Pikachu doesn't end up like Charlie Sheen, eh?
I don’t even think Warren Spector is referring to particular franchises when he says things are getting stale. I just think there’s a staleness to video games in general. Generic third-person shooters, the saturation of first-person shooters, cinematic uncharted clones, etc. It’s all incredibly samey imo.
So many good games seem to fall apart towards the end. I’m trying to avoid reading much about Firewatch because it’s a game I’m looking forward to playing. The critics seem divided though, I’ve heard good things as well as bad.
I stopped enjoying the Call Of Duty single player ‘campaign’ after Modern Warfare. ‘All Ghillied Up’ was a fantastic mission. Unfortunately, I think more and more games will start to place the emphasis on multiplayer functions - predominately because that’s where the money lies. Whilst I think they’ll always be a demand for a single player experience, multiplayer will soon take precedence when it comes to the AAA titles.
You’re right, I feel like Chain Chomp is restricted to a certain circumference. Obviously that makes it far more predictable in terms of danger zone. Unagi, on the other hand, is a creature you’d have to face in his unrestricted environment.
The countryside location reminds me of 28 Weeks Later. Apart from that, I find Zombie games pretty boring now.
Loved the article, but it has some dark consequences. What happens when the world you’ve created in a video game is better than the one you have in real life? You know? Like every game I’ve ever played.
Some games advertise as ‘pay-to-get-ahead’ rather than ‘pay-to-win’ - but it’s all the same, really. Admittedly, some pay-to-win games have handled the format better than others. WarFrame is still pretty good, as is Guild Wars 2.
Humanity now has smartphones and we’ve come a long way from shampoo bottles.
More and more they’re attempting to distance themselves from those previous instalments. Probably because they were more impenetrable to a casual audience.
‘Microsoft have slowly but surely been turning into the bad flatmate of the operating system world.’
Pretty much this. I’ve been really put off Microsoft since they tried spiking the kool-aid with the XboxOne.
