The game play is very good. I am only a mp gamer so don't care about sp modes. What frustrates me though is many of these reviewers giving get the game play a poor review because they have no understanding of the ground game. It's actually better then the stand up portion of the game but takes patience to learn.
The ground game is the most polished part of the game by far. The made a huge mistake by not including an in depth tutorial but the reason you gave it a poor review is because you don't know how to play it. Go to ea ufc forum read the game play devs sticky, grappling guide. Learn the fundamentals and then go back and adjust your score.
There are issues with the game but the game play on the ground and clinch isn't one, that is on you.

Quick add, I have no experience with MVC so I can't speak to that game and do prefer the games with comeback mechanics that are less influential or non existent such as virtua fighter. Though they are done well in sone games like mortal Kombat X where there is serious risk reward on when to use meter or if it should be saved.

May be a last gen game but virtua fighter 5 fs is still the best fighting game around with impeccable net play for the most part. On top of being the most technical and simplistically beautiful it has the greatest character customization options allowing you to truly make your favorite fighters look unique greatly adding to the online experience. How did titanfall need saving? It revolutionized the genre and had the best gameplay of any new shooter at that time, though there was not enough variation in the weapons. Gamers Club Unlocked not only gives you the 20% off new games which equates to $12 savings on a $60 game (writer needs to reup their math classes) but often gives you $10 in reward points for preorders of the most popular games.
