Nintendo has enough cash / investments that it could weather the storm.. It wont scrap the Wii U just like it didnt scrap the Gamecube....
Nintendo just needs to make the WiiU profitable enough to break even and save some face...
Next gen they will just have to take a hard look at what they need to change moving forward. IMO they no longer can rely on just Japan to dev these consoles they need to bring the American arm of the company in. Most the console mark...
I have defended the Wii U for a long time .. Honestly at this point there is nothing Nintendo can do at this point to have it achieve at least a third of what the Wii profits looked like. The most they can hope for is that the numbers are respectable enough to break even and not drag down the success of the 3DS.
Nintendo missed its numbers because they underestimated the current market place and also the affect that the ps4 and x1 would have on holiday sales.. The 3ds only mi...
Target site had all bundles sold out since black Friday. Also I've been to several walmarts and targets deal shopping and they were sold out as well.
Just today I checked the target site and it looks like they got more stock. I'm not sure they are buying many to stock stores anymore. The display cases fit about 4 or 5 boxes on the floor. They have given most their space to ps4 and x1.
I do agree with most your points.. One thing you touched base on was cost of development. Because Nintendo chose not to drastically upgrade the hardware and go with a substantial upgrade of the existing architecture they saved quite a bit of money on development.
Making a Wii game was already substantially less than a ps3 / x360 game... The same argument can be made for Wii U games when compared to the ps4 and x1 ... The break even on a Wii U game is going to be WAY less than...
Vita can only stream 30fps.... Not saying Wii U is better but at least it can do it 60 fps( obvously at lower rez).
Also wii u has a lower install base .. Makes sense it sold less than knack.
Launch software always sells really well... New super mario U sold 200k copies out of 400k wii Us..... You have to factor timing as well mario 3d world launched against Zelda link between world's and the x1.
And again everyone keeps focusing on week 1 sales... Mario titles sell well overtime... Super mario U is already a 2 million seller on a basis of 3 to 4 million consoles. Mario 3d world will sell even better than that... It can't sell more than consoles available ...
You do realize the games your are comparing to have an install base of 70+ million (ghost was released across 6 consoles including pc)? 3d world sold 240k which means 20% of the base of purchased it. That is a really good rate for software considering roughly 2 mil wiius are in the wild in the US. Nintendo also didnt blow up marketing for this game like COD or GTA. COD had a commercial on tv everyday. 20% attchement rate for a system most still dont know exist or understand is very good.
Gameplay says everything... Mario taps into a different way to enjoy a game. It isn't about being a fanboy... It is about playing a game and not worrying about anything else but having fun. They paired nostalgia, gaphics, and just straight fun.. .
Just because it doesn't have a deep story or huge open world doesn't mean it can't be as good a game as GTA or last of us. It is in a different category of game ... If it was that easy to make a game like mario why ...
@DarthZoolu
For the record there have been many threads on this... but Mario doesnt drive system sales in the first week of release... Mario titles tend to have legs and drive sales post week 1 release.
This speaks volumes to their marketing strat going into holidays and beyond ...
Pottery Barn Teen, South West Airlines, Toys R Us, Mall kiosks...
Pretty much targeting Parents and kids (obviously) ... The strat seems ok because of all the casual titles released ... But what happens in 2014 when we start to see more mature titles?
It isnt an excuse actually ...
Wii U has sold 1M consoles in Japan ... Which means 10% of the install base bought the game ... Which IS ACTUALLY a very good attachment rate for a new game.
How are we going to expect this game to sell 1 to 2 million copies if there are only 1 million consoles in circulation there??? GTA 5 and Mario Kart are the only games to sell at a 30% attachment rate lol..
Historically speaking across all Mario titles they...
Wii U has a great stable of games to be honest... the issue is getting people to buy this system over or with the ps4/x1... Hell getting people to know that it is even out is an issue...
SM3DW, NSMBu, Zombie U, Nintendoland, Rayman, Wonderful 101, Pikmin, NFS, Zelda WW, Deus Ex, Nano Assault, COD.... Soon to be Watchdogs, Smash, Mario Kart U, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta 2, X, Zelda U, Yoshi Island......
Holiday 2013 thru Winter 2014 is going to be crucial for the Wii...
You guys have to be out of your mind if you think MSFT will make a Kinectless bundle for the X1 ... The Kinect is practically the entire marketing campaign for the x1.
Outside of TV / Kinect it doesnt have anything else that makes it unique... Plus last gen they sold it as an attachment and not many studios made games for it ... Since it is in every box devs will be more inclined to include features that they know everyone can use.
Msft would be better off ea...
Wondering what the test conditions were? Also I read in other reviews that remote play is limited to 30fps :(
Knack made great use of that 8 gigs of ram **rolls eyes** ..... Nintendo should have done more with the hardware, but the fact of the matter is they didn't.. As a Nintendo fan I only defend the system when I feel it is unjustly being judged.
Nintendo makes great use of what they have hardware wise .. which is all you can ask for from them... Judging by Smash, Mario 3d World, and Mario kart I cant really jump on them for not adding more specs ... all those games look aweso...
Having that money on hand allows them to move on dire situations like this. Other companies q would simply fold.
Shanzzy you do realize that smart glass was a response to the wii U. They developed it only after Nintendo revealed their concept.
Also smart glass and remote play dont work nearly as well as the wii u gamepad. Remote play for the vita is limited to 30 fps and there is very reconizable lag.
@helium please explain how the 3ds is being carried by Mario and Zelda against the next gen vita. Nintendo has always made a system that people eventually own. They have always targeted families and tried to appease third parties.
In willing to bet that over 60 percent of people who own a ps3 or 360 have a wii collecting dust somewhere.
Nintendo doesn't need to win the gen to stay profitable they just need to be relevant.
I just dont understand why it is so hard to make a commercial that says it is a new console and show the box...
They need to rip off what car commercials do and just show the console box itself and pan around the thing saying it is Nintendos Next Gen console with improvements of all the things fans wanted.. Then show a demo reel of features and games like Mario,Miiverse, Netflix, Backwards Compat, and Online....
Something like this...

It isnt to say that Nintendo Japan cant do the job ... they surely can make games and come up with really good ideas as they always have .. But the market is shifting in the US / Europe .. the Casuals have fled to smartphones and tablets ... This really just leaves the hardcore / enthusiasts and the new emerging gamers.. The us branch of Nintendo with Reggie just seem like they are there to be a mouth piece for Japan... rather than a true partner with ideas.. they are in the back seat watchin...
