LBP was devised around user generated content. LBP would not be the same if it had to work without a hard drive hence the developer's comments.
mandatory installs are bad if they don't improve performance but if they improve performance then why the hell shouldn't you praise them? when i buy a ferrari i use all the gears. likewise when i want faster data retrieval i want a hard drive. dvd drives are freaking slow, noisy and unreliable and can't keep up with yesterdays computers let alone today's nextgen games consoles.

unless you are an arcade owner or 20gig owner. which is well over 80% of xbox owners. can't install much with 11 gig to work on.
only optional if you paid up for an elite or at least 100 bucks for 120gig drive.

i think every major ps3 game has had mandotary install. it isn't like this topic is new. i think every developer prefers to work with a hd drive; i know having a hd as standard across all skus is a bonus. having no hd install is like driving a ferrari without getting out of first gear. the slowest and most unreliable component on any games console is the dvd/blu-ray drive by a million miles.
