No, I think you totally misunderstand what's going on. They have built the hardware and software. They have planned and invested for years in this machine. If this machine REQUIRED internet and kinect, that requirement is an integral part of the way the machine works. This requirement cannot simply be changed as a change of policy.

You are all aware, I hope, that Microsoft has just admitted that they lied to all of you. They said that the X1 requires kinect to function. Clearly, it does not. Similarly, they said the X1 requires internet to function - it does not. They have lied to their fanbase twice, and now everyone is rejoicing and proclaiming the power of the consumer. Great game. Bought it on the night of release for full price and don't regret it. Getting it at a large discount is a steal. Better than Bioshock Infinite in my opinion. I'll even consider the LE of the second entry in the series.
My comment shouldn't be taken to imply that only Westerns are neurotic. But having not been to Japan, I can't comment on their society. But having lived in Europe and America, I can safely say that most people I've met and interacted with are unhappy and vent that unhappiness in a variety of neurotic ways.
Because like most people in the West, they are depressed and neurotic. Hence, they express their anger, frustration, sadness and pain in whatever venue is safe - paradigmatically, the internet.
