I'm rooting for the PS3 but from a profit perspective it has cost Sony dearly : approx $5.5 Billion US so far. Its probably the main reason why Sony is focused on profitability first then market share. I'm not really sure how they'll recover those losses and cut the price any further for a while. However officially they say they're on target regarding sales expectations so hopefully profitability is on track. If the PS3 will truly have a 10yr life span Sony still has 8 years to make it back....
"Additionally, it restocked the backwards compatible PS3 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 SKU at $499.99."
Umm, no it didn't.

2004 FY $ 810 (APR 1 2004 - MAR 31 2005)
2005 FY $ 669 (APR 1 2005 - MAR 31 2006)
2006 FY $(3,026) (APR 1 2006 - MAR 31 2007)

2008 FY $( 328) (APR 1 2008 - SEP 30 2008)
thats as far back on sony.net I could go. Maybe do some research to go further back.
SCE has posted 2 profitable quarters since ...

GOW2 is cool but Fable 2, Left 4 Dead, Banjo-Kazooie and Lips don't do it for me. GOW2 - is the only millions+ seller out of the bunch. They didnt mention GTAIV DC but that's not yet confirmed is it ?
Resistance 2 and Socom are guaranteed million + sellers, LBP has potential to be but still too early to call, and Motorstorm I think may do 500,000. A much stronger lineup.
this article was approved. Its written poorly and factually incorrect. Microsoft is not just putting FPS's out in Japan its made concerted efforts to publish RPG's on the platform and currently has more RPG titles out for it than PS3. So its failing despite this. Also, drop the xenophobic sterotype of Japan. They *love* american stuff, like the ipod, for example. The first Xbox was soo wrong for japan which is another hurdle to overcome this gen. And reliability issues have also hurt the perc...

I'm calling you out as a republitroll trying to disguise yourself as an independent. As usual republitroll posts are filled with outright falsities and misleading statements.
Barack Obama plans to cut capital gains taxes on startups and small businesses which are the engine of job growth in the US. To pay for these tax cuts he is going to end the corporate welfare for the oil companies who have posted record profits in all of human history. Still left in place are financial incen...
You're seriously deluded if you think the middle class *remotely* owns anything close to a majority of the value of stocks in this country. The majority stake in both voting and value in Corporate stock is generally owned by a few inidividuals and trusts ... and there's a growing trend to privatize, ie Cerberus.
The middle class hasn't had that kind of financial clout since before Reagan. You may not think that health care is a right, but many countries that provide universal c...
but is getting them in Aug 14. I read somewhere that Sony is stopping replenishing the 40G model as well so I wonder if there will be a few weeks in late Aug / early Sep with no hardware stock at all.
I'm against this practice but Methinks you should pick up as many 80G models now and resell them at xmas, which I bet a bunch of folks are doing.
"article" that says nothing and offers nothing to back it up
these are blown out of proportion.
I too am back playing mgs1,2,3 before playing 4 and am enjoying playing those on my 20GB PS3. The ps2 is hooked up to a monitor in the office and the ps3 is on the main tv in the living room.
So when God of War III comes out what if a non playstation owner wants to play God of War I and II ... they have to buy a separate ps2 and ps3.
Thank you deeznuts for providing that figure on the cost of BC .. $27. That amount per console is not chump change -- 10m console...
for subsidizing that $399 US price ! It it were this cheap in Europe you'd pay 250 Euro / £199
... the US price doesn't include sales tax tho. Usually the quoted price in UK / Europe includes the VAT doesn't it?
microsoft for this poaching strategy. its not a really progressive strategy ... so really all they've done is minimize the differentiation between a 360 and a ps3 .. they're really in this to drive Sony out and reap the $$ rather than to progress video games as a form of entertainment and art. With the exception of xbox live i just don't think there's much innovation there. Of course they all steal from each other a bit but its microsofts primary modus operandus.
on the current 40GB stock to clear it. probably some pack in or coupon or something.
is the old 40G model with an upgraded HD. no PS2 B/C, no card readers, and 2 USB ports.
For $399 it still compares favorably to a 60G 360 at $349.
Still i wish they came up with a pure software ps2 emulator that could run on ps3 hardware, but it seems as though its technically impossible. B/c still seems to be a sticking point with ps2 owners.
The desirable model is the 80G model at $499. Granted you get a lot for the $499 -- a bundled game, bluray, 80 - 90% BC (vastly improved with fw 2.41), wifi, etc...
Its just not a mass market price... which is why the wii hits 750k/mo regularly in the US. The PS3 needs to hit $299 with PS2 b/c restored and some decent RPGs.
while the SCE division has been losing money since the launch of the PS3 Sony Corp as a whole has been turning a profit. It is likely that SCE will be profitable FY2009...
Sony will need to leverage their hardware/software investments this gen into next gen. I think they will have to try to do a game changer much like nintendo did with the Wii... use existing, cheap, profitable tech in a new way to reach mass market.
