When people say something must be censored to some lowest common denominator, be it for reasons as innocent as localization, or making a certain age appropriateness rating according to the standards of a region, or as real as something offensive potentially killing profits, they act as if we are still in the VHS era where everyone must see and hear the same thing. It may still be true for the cinemas and theater, but nowhere else, especially not video games.

It is so easy t...

Having a dedicated Blu-ray remote helped a lot on the PS3. Why is it so hard to make that same remote work for the PS4?

I had this issue with the PS4 as well. It varied from title to title, and each time, the PS3 played the same disc without issue.

I assume your talking about the used game restrictions they went back on.

Steam, which has far less consumer friendly policies with regards to resale (not allowed at all), and lending (letting someone borrow a collection is in beta, but no single title lending), is far worse than what Microsoft tried to do. Yet, Steam has a big following.

I was actually pleasantly surprised enough people got up in arms about it to force Microsoft to change their policy. I t...

Of course, it helps, but you don't have to have the engine finished to get started on a game. It should not prevent story development, concept art, the cultural research they do, creation of assets, etc. These will help develop their vision for the game, and the rendering techniques that they feel will best represent that vision may very well be guiding the development of the engine itself.

Of course, you would have to ask ND to elaborate on their statement and their de...

Better hardware making programmers less hackish, or "lazy", or "less able to solve problems" is nothing new. Same could be said about NES and SNES programmers simply being able to throw bitmaps on the screen when compared to mapping objects to scan lines on the Atari 2600 because there was not enough memory to handle a screen full of data at once.

As mentioned, texture streaming has been common for a while. I think we are seeing more articles on it lately because the recently released DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL 4.4 specs provide direct support for a lot of what used to used have to be implemented in game code and middleware.

Won't change last gen, but should be another tool for next-gen titles.

You can't go into F2P with this notion of only spending X amount of money. You may find that gives you a complete experience with the game if X is high enough, but you have no way of knowing that until you have spent X.

If X turns out not to be enough, you are either going to feel you have wasted X, or go over your original budget so you don't feel that the X spent was wasted.

As a general rule of thumb, when something is advertised as "free&quo...

Secret of Mana

... One of the best soundtracks ever!!!

Not only that...

They give you the satisfaction of their complete, full games right out of the box and on the disc. Nice to not constantly be nagged for micro-transactions or DLC.

That does not mean it can fill nearly as many pixels or push nearly as many polygons at the same frame rates and with the same sophistication of effects as the PS4. It just means it can paint the same picture at some point.

No matter how you slice it, the battle for those looking at raw specs is lost for Nintendo.

But then, I can't imagine wanting Super Mario 3D World to look any different than it does now, or what was on demo for Zelda, etc.

Of course I'd prefer the ports be real next-gen experiences, but still, I'd love to see some last-gen games ported to next-gen, even if it is mostly "just" higher resolution and frame rates.

That is a double edged sword. Those who got them on last-gen would feel cheated, but for those who held off waiting/saving for next-gen, it would be great.

How much time they would be "wasting" depends on the effort required to port. For som...

You say that as if Dragon's Dogma was a game that dropped the ball. It had its flaws, but by most accounts, it was a great game.

I'll happily take any flaws Dragon's Dogma may have had over the flaw that is "F2P".

Thanks for that list.

I really like Studio Ghibli, and was waiting for Ni No Kuni, but when it was released, it never hit my radar. Now, I see it got great reviews, (so was it really "underrated") and I bought it for $20.

Can't wait to play it!

We might say these are not intrusive, but all of these "non-intrusive" ads slowly add up to being generally intrusive and diluting of the experiences for which you are paying, and they usually try to ween people in to ads being bigger and bigger parts of those experiences.

After paying $400 for a device, $60 for games and probably $60 for PS+ each year, paid ads have NO place outside of sections where they are specifically requested.

It sounds like, at most, a PS+ or XBox Live subscription will be required, not a separate one for the game.

At one point Capcom had a hard time learning to count to III, now they can't count to V.

Remember the days when you would get a special ending if you completed a game on hard, or no ending besides a screen telling you to complete the game on a harder difficulty if you only completed it on easy?

I like that this trend went away.

Not everyone has all the time in the world to become expert level players, and being able to adjust a game to the challenge that is right for you without be penalized content wise is a great thing. Varying the "twitc...
