I agree that portraying men in an overly muscular physique, is also in itself a problem, but I think it's less "over sexualisation" and more along the the lines of "self projection" Characters like Kratos and Marcus Fenix for example, weren't designed to look sexually appealing to women, they were designed the way they were in order to appeal to men, so that we could idealise them and enjoy playing in the shoes of what many men would consider an alpha male, a "...

Thanks for reading and commenting!

It is true that there's a little too much complaining going on about the "misrepresentation" of women in video games, what I think people need to realise is that gaming is still very much a male dominated pass time. However, it is also true that many pubs/devs may be missing out on purchases from female gamers who dislike the over sexualised top and often exaggerated proportions of many women portrayed in video games.

I can't say I'd ever considered that before, I imagine a fair amount of female gamers pass on many of those types of games due to just that exact reason.

Publishers and developers would do well to take note of this, it seems these days instead of catering their games toward those who would find most enjoyment in playing them, they instead continue to create accessible, watered down, generic experiences, and then hope against hop...

@H0RSE

That's not really fixing the problem, it's just ignoring the issue.

We pay the same amount of cash as those degenarats massing up casual online multiplayer, so should we not be also be alowed to enjoy it ourselves?

Is that what this is about? that's BS!

How about instead we have harsher restrictions for players trash talking and verbally abusing others? But that won't happen and you know why that is? because these companies don't want to restrict a ton of gamers and risk upsetting them and loosing them all as potential future customers.

Halo did well to popularise console multiplayer shooters, but the problem is most multiplayer FPS's still haven't developed much past the original formula and are still using tired old game mechanics purely because they are proven to work, instead of trying to push the genre further like Halo did in the first place.

Soul Calibur 3 would have been the better choice IMO, the second one just felt very lacking in content.

(Edit)

But what about Character customisation? Character builder? Chronicles of the sword mode? Alternate paths in story mode, and arguable the best combat and line up of original fighters the series has seen to date?

Don't get me wrong, I really liked Soul Calibur 2 on GC, playing as Link was awesome, but I always felt the game was one...

I get your point, but I think the issue is more about who actually wants to spend $60 on a game they aren't sure they'll even like? or better yet, how many games are worth the $60 price tag?

People would be more likely to take a chance on a new IP if the price of a game was more reasonable, the more new IPs we have the more variety w get, and variety is the spice of life after all. Otherwise it's just bland and generic rehashes of tired old formulas being repackag...

"More Players Equals More Fun"

I wholeheartedly disagree with that statement, the majority of the games I have gotten the most enjoyment out of are single player only. Not that multiplayer is a bad thing, but it just sucks when it's unnecessary or tacked on as an after thought.

Are you serious? The graphics and mechanics of games today may have improved but just about everything else has gotten worse.

How many older games had as many game breaking bugs as we get today? more often than not the patches end up just causing new problems, not to mention the fact that originality and creativity in the mainstream is virtually non existent.

Yeah, games might have more visual flare and tighter controls, but more often than not it's just ...

Modern gaming in a nutshell... 60$ games that feel half finished, have a ton of bugs, encourage you to buy DLC and other forms of micro-transactions, and then of course the industry wonders why gamers seem so dam "entitled" well you know what maybe we are, maybe we're entitled to a freaking finished game, to not feel like we aren't getting our moneys worth unless we put more money to buying DLC, DLC that was probably content cut from the game before release!

I started playing Bioshock for the first time a few months ago, I just got passed the point you kill your first "Big Daddy" and then I stopped playing... I don't honestly remember why but I think it probably had something to do with the game play mechanics feeling a bit archaic, though the fact I played Bioshock Infinite first might not have helped the matter.

Anyway I should probably get back to finishing it since the game is considered by many to be one of the...

Good review.

I've not had the privilege of playing any of the old school Metal Gear games, but seeing as I'm a huge fan of the franchise I probably should get round to it sometime.

I can't say I would have given Metroid Other M a near perfect score and quite so many 10's, given the fact that during my play through I found the game to be lacking in more than a few areas.

But then again it's all personal opinion, anyway hopefully the next Metroid game will be as good if not better.

Thanks! Will do.

Given the overall quality of your blog that praise means a lot, you keep doing what you're doing to mate!

I disagree regarding satirical articles, good satire is still relevant it's just the low brow crap we usually get that needs to stop, but I'd much rather that than needless "top (insert numerical value) of (insert game, franchise, console or whatever) articles".

But I couldn't agree with you more when it comes to those damn ads.

Excellent blog.

It's certainly worth reiterating the fact that the "false reality" portrayed by games, can and does have an effect on how may people (especially youngsters) perceive actually reality. Great graphics do well to give the illusion of an accurate portrayal of "reality" but many game worlds and their inhabitants are hollow and void of "reason" and "complexity" and often portraying the hero or villains complete extremes of...
