I have been gaming since the Atrai days.
Every console gen I just buy 1 console. Simple as that. No options for upgrade no thinking or wanting to upgrading hardware until the next gen rolls. This move will change that because the option will be available.
Is this simplicity that is part of the reason why consoles sell to the masses.
Going this route will move the console market closer to the smartphone and PC market which will fracture...
Its going to be hard to beat U4 this year because Rock star and Bethesda are not releasing a game this year.
Bioware also would be stiff competition but ME is delayed until next year.
I don't mind delays if there are lots of games to play. As such I really don't mind this one.
That has always been the case and why we have seen improvement in games performance (generally) as the gen progress. We always see 1st party dev say they maxed the PS console when they release a 1st party game. Obviously what they meant was they did the absolute best they can with the time they have. Obviously they will find more juice and exceed their previous offering later.
Now I worry they will not.
I agree. Its going to be so bad if they go this route for so many reasons.
Millions of hardcore fans will find out that they will need to upgrade to get better performance for later games which is a deal breaker.
What makes it worse is that no one is asking for this. The devs are happy with the PS4 being easy to dev for as well as being the most powerful. PS4 gamers are happy getting the best mulitplats and exclusives. I have never seen or heard any PS4...

The biggest threat to Sony is the real possibility that gamers will skip the PS5 and wait for the PS5.5 come next gen.
I would definitely will not buy a PS5 at launch and wait for the PS5.5 if these rumors turn out to be true.
This is where MS can swoop in. The first 3 years is the most important years as we have seen with the x360 and PS4.

Dev was always my biggest concern. One static hardware allowed devs to optimized their game engine throughout the gen affording better preforming games throughout the gen like with Uncharted 1 all the way to TLOU later on. This has always been the console model. You buy a console you expect better games as the gen progress without have to make a hardware upgrade as the upgrades will be from the software and not hardware. Hardware upgrades for better preforming games is the PC model.

So basically PS4 Neo owners will be able to play PS5 games albeit inferior to PS5 console as there will be a PS4 Neo version and PS5 version.
It is clear that this is Sony's future strategy.
I would not be surprised if 3rd party publisher pushed for this. They would be happy that perhaps at least 25 million PS4 Neo would be able to play PS5 games when the 9th gen starts in another 3 y...

With you completely on this. You and I have been die hard playstation fans but this move is not only bad for Sony, bad for devs, and most especially bad for gamers. Basically it is bad for the industry period.
PS fans certainly didn't ask for an upgraded PS4 because we already have the best console this gen. Devs also has the best console to dev for with the PS4 this gen being more powerful and easy to dev on top of having a bigger install base than the PS2 in the same...
If this is what they are going for and if there is a ps5 is it fair we should also expect a ps5.5
Can they guarantee that 1st party devs will fully optimise for both existing specs like they do with just the one spec in previous gens.
Been saying that since these rumors started. I am a die hard Sony fan but this move by them is the wrong move. Similar to what MS tried with their DRM policies at the start.
It will literally change console gaming as we know it. What we will have in the end is a cheap and weak PC that can only do 1/10 of what an actual PC can do.

@volkama. Because the console market is different from the smartphone market. I don't want the console market to be the same as the smartphone market.
If there are two versions a base version and a Neo version as they say will
1. Cost more for devs not just money but time. Someone will have to pay for that.
2. Will most likely slow down the rate of games being dev meaning longer wait for gamers.
3. Having two versions of games will not allow the dev to fully optimise for one hardware. This is similar to multip plat devs that normally don't take full advantage of the console like with 1st party.
I hope so. If it is then it is fine with me. Leave the next game hardware upgrade for the PS5

2. A PS4.5 will ensure Sony will not lead early next gen when they release the PS5 because many will wait for the PS5.5 before they upgrade.
Personally I will stop supporting Sony if they release an upgraded "games" console.
