If you match up the top 20 NPD with this information, it does fit in. I'm guessing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom would have been in the top 25 or so, which isn't that bad at all.
Even though the game sounds interesting, I'm skeptical about the game. I'm definitely hoping that it turns out to be an enjoyable experience, though.

So, Nintendo acknowledged that there have been inventory shortages for Wii recently.

Haha. Well, the reason why Nintendo did so well in January is because a lot of popular software was released in Japan, like Dragon Quest. Meanwhile, older titles like Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver continue to sell.
It's funny how Dragon Quest VI released late in January, but had the biggest impact.
Isn't EA bringing Sports Active to the PS3/360?
