I'm not surprised that the hardware isn't making money. MS' new strategy seems to be to slash and burn all barriers to entry. Get everybody onto their latest platform, and then make bank in software and services.

The article, which you clicked on, is concerned with whether or not consoles will hold back PC development. Building games that are more technologically advanced than most PCs can run is very obviously not profitable. So, the only thing holding PC game development "back" is money. Period.
Building insanely expensive games for an incredibly limited audience is a logical absurdity and basically impossible....

It's just a silly suggestion. Most people's PCs are generally in line with what consoles are capable of. No use in developers creating games for an insignificantly small minority of gamer's who happen to have duel Titan setups.
The great thing about PC development is that's it's really open. Nothing holds PC developers back besides money.
Have been slow burning the MCC campaigns, on mission 3 of Halo 4. Should transition seamlessly into 5, which will be cool. Never finished 4 before, either.
On the other hand, I know that the first thing I'm going to do is jump into a warzone lobby and remain there until such time that my body starts to fail for lack of basic needs.

But you're right about one thing. No point in defending it. Never has been. Most of us console game by choice, and are more than well aware that the grass is greener (and probably thicker and less pixelated) on the PC side of the fence.
