They threw out a few different possibilities, nothing was ever confirmed, and then everyone freaked out and they changed the policy before they ever even announced how it was going to work.

Have you ever used an Xbox in your life? Because that is not how it works.
You can page through 7 pages of tiles on the 360 dashboard, and you'll see about 4 ads, all of which are one single small tile down in the corner of the screen that you never have to even look at.
They aren't intrusive, they are never forced on you, they are just quietly there if you choose to see what they are advertising.

I know my PS3 has went without being turned on for a year or more on a couple different occasions over this generation.
And my Wii hasn't been turned on since right after Punch Out came out. I moved recently and it's still boxed up. I didn't really see a reason to get it out and hook it up.

Xbox 360 (my favorite current gen console) "lost" the last console war, but did that impact me in any way? No.
So when I own both consoles this gen, and one of them "wins", am I going to notice or care?? Nope, not a bit.
