This article is NOT fully about having the XMB as open source XMB .. like being able to view its code and being able to compile it for any CPU.. it's more about that XMB customisation that PSLS.net talked about a while back and going even further than that to allow something similar to Microsoft's XNA but creating the apps for the XMB and not creating games..

i bought my acer 5920g a month or two back.. came with vista, removed the crap to put XP on it as a back up OS besides linux as the main OS.. decided it would be cooler to have vista as well so installed vista, first of, it took me ages to find xp drivers, and then to install them one by one.. then in vista, the drivers were preloaded (OEM) but it took me ages to remove all the crapware from acer.. linux on the other hand.. 99% of the stuff worked fine, no crapware.. only thing that didn't wo...
IBM specialises more in servers and all.. but also does home pc's :P
Sun Microsystems create OpenOffice and Sun Microsystems have also created Java and designed it to be multiplatform.. its more convenient for them to create it in Java coz you would only need to create it once, and it will work on all devices that support Java (technically it would also work on a phone that supports Java)
