I think that people see both having almost the same entertainment value, so they go with the significantly cheaper platform.
(Imagine something similar; the Nexus 7 undercutting almost anything near it of similar Android devices)
I'm afraid that even if they drop the price to 179.99 for the core system itself, people'd still be complaining about the cards.

It's debatable but the PSP was like that.
Hacked to high heavens, hardware was selling so well but it wasn't better on the software sold. Devs outside Japan hadn't given it as much love compared to the other systems.
Just selling mostly hardware isn't great.
I totally agree with the "Well, Nintendo dropped the MSRP" (then much of the hate was lifted).. they did and big time! 250 bucks to 180.
Because of that, I guess some are expecting Sony to do that with the VITA as well. It's their turn to show a good strategy.
I kind of disagree with you on MH being the saviour of the 3DS though.. although it did help] a lot.. well tons! LMFAO at animal crossing sales 600K! (big N games > MH)

MC3FN looks better than COD and IMO has better campaign.. not to mention MP for 12! for 5 DOLLARS!

It's not like the hardware's completely different too.. Isn't the VITA an ARM device with similar specs to the ipad 2-3 (albeit slower clockspeed from the rumors)?
