This is based off what I have heard concerning the difficulty of developing games for them and how different the two (or is it three now?) VR sets will be when it comes to developing games. Well, the way I understand the WiiMote and what has happened to it is this:
They built the motion control feature into the gamepad and allow the WiiMote to be connected to the console to be used with games the support it. I mainly use my own for playing Wii games on my Wii U. So yes, it is still thought of and supported by the current console.

In one respect, I disagree. Amiibo do not unlock traditional things associated with DLC like maps or game modes. They unlock costumes and items that are not required to play the game and confer no advantage to the player when used.

With as much negative response Nintendo is getting for locking what they have behind Amiibos (things like costumes), I seriously doubt they will make the unlock-able content actually matter (say, a game mode or map).
