The story doesn’t matter. State of decay is a simulation game. You build your characters and if they die then they’re gone for the rest of the game. You build your base and collect resources, etc. It’s very much gameplay focused but that’s what separates it from the rest for me.

It would be more surprising if you said there weren’t any lootboxes. It’s probably safe to assume there will be lootboxes in majority of games from now on. People can whine all they want but it doesn’t change the spreadsheets. It should not take 100 million dollars to create a solid single player experience, I’m sorry. There is a no clips video talking about the kind of games like system shock, prey and calling them “immersive sims”. That is my favorite kind of game and it doesn’t need to cost that much.
