It sort of directs the market. If a good number of people are willing to pay for something, then the market adjusts to that price level, thus making the price a standard that all others will have to pay.
If the product sells poorly at that price, then the market will again adjust itself, and the price will change to cater to the market.

The original PS3s were not as reliable as the PS3 slims. They consumed more power, heated up faster, and had diode laser issues, and cost a lot.

Why would you expect a multiplatform game from 2010 to look better than a contemporary exclusive?
Obviously Crysis 2 looks better than Resistance and Uncharted 1, but it's not going to look better than an exclusive released around the same time. And in 2013 a multiplatform game will probably look better than Killzone 3. But the point is that exclusives usually perform and look better because the developers take full advantage of the architecture.
On consoles, Uncharted 2 looks better than Crysis 2.
Edit: Panda, I will wait for more footage of Crysis 22, but from what I've seen Crysis 2 doesn't look nearly as crisp as UC2. There's a lot of special effects in UC2 that I can't articulate well, but I haven't seen them in Crysis 2.

Although harsh, I have to agree that people who went out and bought a 3DTV right now are being foolish.
The technology is still being refined. And yeah, all tech is being refined, but 3DTVs are the next big thing so they are being refined very fast. Early adopters who purchased the initial fruits of 3D tech have to pay a good deal of money for a product that will have problems, higher power consumption, lower lifecycle and a higher inital cost.
