The original 'PS' was PSX it had a few runs (a few hundred or so) in Japan before it was discontinued. Then a couple years later the PS came out. The slim PS is called PS one.
During PS2, Sony released PSX (PS2 with dvr capabilities) in Japan.
your comparing to a PS3 which is a little over 5 years old now to a new portable... portables are generally more expensive. take a look at cost of a desktop vs laptop.
And tablets/phones are ~$500-600... but a portable game system cant be $250?

i believe there's white ps3 in Japan, so the FF13 ps3 colour is not 'unique'
they can just buy each child their own memory card...
