There's a few potential variables here,
You have Morrowind & Gothic e.g. those are designed from the ground up to be played without such guidance, and it works. It's immersive.
Then I remember trying to play Assassins Creed 1 without the HUD (because it looked cleaner / more immersive). The option to remove the HUD is there, but it's impossible to play as there's no built in design to play it without the waypoint "crutches".

As a Project Manager, it is your role to clearly map-out what a request requires; setting expectations by disclosing how long each milestone should take to deliver, and generally how long for full completion.
You could say SE have done this to some degree for at least Part 1 & Part 2.
Other than that, they don't appear to have any idea how long the dev cycle will be to complete this game in its entirety. i.e. they're making it up as they go al...
It's simple. Be smart. Don't buy it, until it's confirmed to be good.
