To be fair to MS, they came out and said starting out it would be better suited to commercial projects.
I agree with you, The last company to try a significant upgrade to a console was Sega with the Genesis 32x. It upped the cost to the developer and fragmented the install base. It was the beginning of the downfall of Sega. That's why no one has really tried since.
I think Sony just like Microsoft is testing future console configurations and rumors are flying based on that.
Hopefully this is true, but it will need to do 4k out of the box. If the rumors are true about Playstation and Xbox they will need to ensure that. I imagine they have a couple of configurations of the NX ready to go. Of course 4k is wishful thinking, but they did surprise the world with the Wii. Lets hope they do it again.

Wow, a lot of experts on this site. Cracks me up because unless you actually understand how it works, how can you criticize it??? Is it 720p in the traditional sense....NO!! they take two 720p images combined together and are outputted to 1080p. Big difference to upscaling in the traditional sense. Even so the game looks amazing and the early previews are all positive. In the end this will be a great game that will break new grounds in story telling and play through!!!
I'm glad to hear it's interesting to play and different from all the others. Hopefully this inspires more games to take a unique approach to story telling and choices. Story telling in games hasn't really ever changed that much, especially on AAA games that use the same old story mechanics. Will be picking this one up on launch.
The developer is really proud of his game and making said statement just shows his confidence in the final product. Nothing wrong with that at all. As a gamer and loving to see games pushed to the limits,(even if he ends up being off a little) its going to be a visual beast of a game and a blast to play. As a counsole player we should all be fired up when they give the pc boys with thousands spent on rigs a good ribbing in the visual department. Especially by a $349 dol console. Way to go Unc...

I'm excited by the news but Sony does need to stress the extra equipment that will be required. I've have been working retail for 15 years and most people never read the smaller print. It does lead to problems, especially for the employees that have to face the brunt of a unhappy consumer..........That said, I hope Sony makes it more obvious and advertises it well. Well to be fair "sonyisbest98" would I want to pay just over $800 dol. for the bundle that gives me everything to get going or buy Oculus Rift and still have to invest into a computer that is capable. I would easily be over a thousand dollars just to play.

why do people buy consoles? Simple, their cheap and do a good job on the graphics side of things. If your still under your parents house, then they are probably not going to buy a gaming pc.
