If you go into steam no mans sky steam properties and go to beta tab and type in 3xperimental for the password it unlocks the beta
I've just tried the beta patch out on Steam and it has vastly improved performance. Just before I updated I just landed on a planet which was about 90% water and my framerate plummeted to about 3-5fps and made the game totally unplayable, but now after the patch I'm getting a pretty consistent 60fps, most of the stuttering has gone too.
It shouldn't have happened, but well done for the team working all night to sort it out.

Character DLC unlocks are only free if you are willing to build up enough fight money to unlock them, 100k per character? okay sure good luck. This is even worse than EA's sneaky micro-transaction approach where you can gain weak battlepacks and rank up for free or skip all of that and unlock everything for real money. geez atleast with BF4 the content was offered in game not whored out as free DLC as an incentive for buying the game.

The only boxed games I see in GAME now is just The Sims, Bethesda games, GTA V and a few old repackaged classics.
I bet most sales are from The Sims and all of its stuff packs and expansions as most Sims fans seem to still love boxed copies.
