He made a mistake and admitted it. Reviewing something you don't normally do isn't so easy. Imagine reviewing an opera for instance. You wouldn't know what to look for.
In fact, call this a review for people who don't know about gaming. Most people who read the paper don't normally read other video game publications, so this is a perfect review for them, because they wouldn't be familiar with games like the rest of us.
Nothing's wrong with them. They serve their purpose well. Both of them, they provide entertainment with a sense of accomplishment, and they provide a safe haven for the people that failed life.
Just make it subtle, don't do crap that effects the gameplay.
Think of a GTA mission.
*Head to the nearest Burger King.
*Pick up the King Size rifle from the king himself.
*Take the Slim Jim train to Snap in to a Slim Jim Boulevard.
*Assassinate Ronald McDonald before the Big Mac Mafia can kill you.

No one buys an anime game just because they are looking for a good fighter. They usually buy it because they are a fan. These people overlook the games flaws because they are fans of the material. Fans of anime don't want the main character to go around hunting for coins, they want them to fight with other characters. I think anime fighters actually help the fighting game genre. People are drawn in by familiar characters. Seriously, as good as SSB is, do you think it would have been as succes...
Even though it just came out, I like Snakeball. Online matches are crazy. But out of these three, I have to pick SSHD. As good as Everyday Shooter's sound and visuals are, it is pretty frustrating to people who only want to play a quick game.
