If they buffed loot drops, people could ignore lack of content or some bugs for a bit. But when you spend hours playing and get 0 drops that are usable (for even the class your playing - yay for getting legendaries for a different class), then you get a dwindling playerbase.
If they wanted to keep people, they could have flipped a switch and brought the loot drop increase back like when it was bugged (and they fixed the 'problem' within 12 hours). If they had loot dropping, people might have felt some sense of reward and ignored the severe lack of endgame content for a bit. Instead, you have match making dying in a game that is scaled for 4 people in dungeons or open world (and some people saying that can't even match make into GM3 or GM2 at times, ...
If you read all the articles before hand about making sure to communicate and all the support they were gonna give after launch, it's quite sad...

With what they showed, there was no deviating beyond a small linear path and a few arenas to fight in. It'll most likely be the FFXIII of star wars - might get lucky if it has one big open area to play in.

Probably depends on your weapon and skills / passive setup. With a 2her, I was making big bertha in the depths stumble from some attacks. Have you ever gone to a casino and lost thousands? Not many do, but you have people that are addicts and do. You're gambling on getting something good with very very low chances.
And FFXIV is going in its 3rd expansion and has a huge player base. All it took was admitting fault and working towards fixing it. BW has never admitted fault, blamed luck as being misunderstood (when other games/dev's have removed it previously), and ignoring the fading fan base. People want more permanent content and better loot drops. 8 week timed event, with the first 2 being cosmetics only, is not going to bring people back.
The customization in the game is pretty good. Nice that you can also change things around if you get bored and want to try a new look. Combat is Soulsish, with some nice passive/active ability changing as you go and using one's from 1 tree in another.
Check reddit. Hilarious when people post pics if not being able to match make into anything beyond gm1 for freeplay or dungeons... Or having to wait till they match make at least 1 person to start a dungeon. The player base is dying and a 8 week timed event instead of content there forever, isn't going to help much.
For a game that is content starved, an 8 week time limited event is the perfect idea... /s
And the first 2 weeks (pre-cataclysm) are cosmetics only, so only 6 weeks of new gear then gone...
