I watched an interview with a developer (I think it was for Disney's Aladdin) from years ago and he said they were required to raise the difficulty because so many games were rented back then. They didn't want the game finished quickly so you had to rent it longer. it was the home-rental equivalent of pumping more quarters into an arcade machine.

It was for several years. The last 6 months PS Plus has caught up to it. The competition between MS and Sony is good for gamers, though. It forces each company to try to outdo the other and keeps there prices from going up and up.

Also important to note, this "developer" was one minor technician who worked in the motion capture division. TheGamer tries to make it seem like a bigger deal by calling the employee "Hogwarts Legacy Developer", when it was just one guy out of literally hundreds that worked on the game.
