"IBM Have Not Stopped Cell Development"
Yeah right, like I've written in one of my last comment
three days ago. ;)
@PS360WiiRocks: "Ok so problem solver what you're essentially saying is
that what the PS4 needs is just better programmers?" Very true. The current
PS3 can easily be spiced up to deliver a powerful system for a possible PS4.
Just add another Cell processor (possibly both on one die), a reworked RSX
with about 500MB - 1GB VRAM @ 50GB/s, and about 2GB - 4GB of RAM with a
bandwidth of either 50 or even 100GB/s. Such a system offers a *tremendous*

527 days ago, about how the Cell processor compares to a P4 and against the
three PowerPC processors within the 360 from a pure computational standpoint;

@PS360WiiRock: "I'm curious how cell could be made more powerful? memory?
more spus?" Neither of these. Despite increasing the amount of SPEs, memory
bandwidth, and local store would be very welcome, the main problem is a lack
of skilled programmers who have an good understanding of parallel programming.
Parallel programming differs so much from old plain sequential programming
that one can say that these are two different worlds. You need to be...
I strongly believe that IBM will have an answer to all of this -- a Cell
processor with an embedded graphics unit in one die. Who knows? Recently
IBM offered the possibility to program the Cell processor with OpenCL such
that the invested effort isn't lost when moving on to a (their) next-gen
processor. So if you develop your programs with OpenCL it is pretty much
obvious that those programs will also run on any new processor coming out
wit...
The article says that IBM is pulling out of the Cell development, meaning,
they are not going to produce the envisioned PowerXCell-8i+ processor utilizing
two PowerPC- and 32 SPEs cores in one enclosure. Why? Despite the Cell offers
an outstanding number-crunching capability, which performs at it best when
applied to non-aligned data-structures (i.e. trees, unstructured grids, etc.),
which becomes possible due to the explicit nature of the memory interface

Thx.
Most ppl become pretty now. Ehm ... xD
@zladko: fully signed.
MGO is such an awesome game. It is virtually my one and only
online game I play (next to WipEout HD).

Hm? Bomberman Ultra? Anyone?
Respect
Yeah a slight edge goes to the 360 on the GPU side. However, that edge can
easily be compensated by Cell. A GPU won't make your world turn nor does it
bring life into it. And as you know, the GPU as well as the CPU can't stand on
their own. So in all honestly, summing everything together gives a clear edge
to the PS3. And this is even proved in practice. Btw; U2 will blow Crysis out of
the water. No question about that.
Hey TheLaughingMan, perhaps they like the system with the greatest failure rate
because they may likewise fail in RL. I can see some relations. 8) I lol'd! xD
@cherrypie
If you compare the PS3 and the 360 in isolation with respect to graphics
processing, then the 360 might have the edge. The RSX doesn't really fit
the PS3, unfortunately. But if you are comparing these two console by
raw computational power, then the situation is totally different.

and you've got three PowerPC cores, each of them having dual threads --

Don't get to deep into all of this. ;)
346 days and 17 hours ago I outlined how the Cell processor of the PS3 is
superior over a Pentium4 (PC) as well as over a PowerPC (360). From the
perspective of a game-developer the PS3 has 3.5x more computational
power than a 360, and 7x more computational power than a PC utilizing
a single Pentium4 processor. Read: http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

@ALL-MGO-Freaks: Boxpopping is a skill. I love my Box! :)
Got the same thought while playing MGO.
Here is the message from the official MGO page;
"PSN Maintenance 24.03.2009
Maintenance will be undertaken on the "PLAYSTATION(R)
NETWORK" between 24.03.2009 0:00-2:00(GMT).
During these times, customers may be unable to connect
to the PLAYSTATION(R) Network."
LOL
They are crying in disbelieve. xD
