True PirateThom - I've barely played any Silent Hill games (I'd like to play Silent Hill 3 the most) but if you stick the same enemies reacting in the same ways in they just won't scare many people who've played the previous games and what was once a novel idea for one particular game in the series starts to becomes more commonplace.
I have an image of the last part of the game - a mansion literally falling apart at the seams at the end and you having to find your way out of it by different ways as a result, up bits of fallen timber on to the roof and through the cellars, blasting your way through pretty much any part of the scenery that you want to with a huge cannon, uncovering powerful creatures that are used almost as an afterthought in the final scenes.
In an old mansion in the US or somewhere in Northern Europe e.g. England.
I haven't played Resident Evil 5 however some people have said that they would have preferred them not have stuck with the control mechanics of RE4 for such an action-oriented game.
The criticism that people make of RE5 could have been made of RE4.
It isn't RE5 that took the Resident Evil series in a direction that was not for purist Resident Evil fans. That had already happened in Resident Evil 4 to some extent- Capcom were continuing in a similar way that had served th...
I think that when we're spending just a few pounds, on music, films or games, we may not mind having a digital download, especially as it may cost us more than that to travel to visit a shop or pay for postage and packaging. But if we're spending anything like £30-£50 we may want something physical, something permanent feeling and solid, in our hands.
Also, with current games we get 2 things- we get digital art (the game) and physical artwork on the game box itself. I...
True - I don't think that Cooper from Grabbed by the ghoulies rolls off as many people's tongues.
But what are the new Nintendo characters that roll off many people's tongues after the N64?
The first time that I played Ocarina of Time is when it was included on a second disc with The Wind Waker. Although the music seemed good and there was a sense that an epic adventure was before me, I couldn't get in to it. The graphics and the pacing have aged quite a lot. It requires you overlooking the limited textures of the N64 (something that Rare seem to have improved on). It also doesn't hold your hand anywhere near as much as The Wind Waker. For a newcomer like me to the series, the a...
No, they didn't publish a list of the greatest 200 games of all time. They published a list of what in thier opinion are the greatest 200 games of all times or the list that they want you to think are the greatest 200 games of all time.
Most of you are too kind about this list or simply haven't read it thoroughly. It's an absolute waste of time as a list. They know or care nothing about most of the great British games that were produced on the Amiga, Commodore 64 or Spectrum.

'Actually, it's safe to say that when it comes to designing characters, no company does it better.'
No actually - I'll take Cranky Kong, En Guarde and all the other animal characters in DKC, Banjo Kazooie, Joanna Dark and Conker (all designed by Rare) over Nintendo's own.
Snake? If I liked smug moustached aging heroes that much I'd have bought a Wii.
To me the way that so many people would rather put Snake as an icon sums up what has gone wrong with gaming on Playstation consoles. Back in the day, it was thought that you should always have a cute animal character on your console (even the Xbox had Blinx for a short time)
to take on the Mario and Sonic games. Now no-one bothers. Instead of pleasingly linear and COLOURFUL games that you can...
It's a frequent thing to see people saying that Rare aren't as good as they used to be. This is not without some reason as they set the benchmark so high on the SNES with Donkey King Country and then with many N64 games.
But, as is natural, several things have changed- including you to a small or large extent- and things have always changed for Rare partly because they admirably refuse to just concentrate on one type of genre.
When Rare released an FPS or platfor...
Kid Icarus should be Nintendo's priority, either as a part 3D/part 2D game or as a fully 2D game. It will give long time Nintendo fans something to be pleased about. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it to Retro Studios to give them a break from the Metroid series.
Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat was quite good on the Cube but they can't live up to what Rare did with Donkey Kong Country.
Although there was deserved mentions of Disney Megadrive games in general and Cool Spot (and, thankfully, some less good looking SNES games were left out for a change) I'd have liked to have seen Donkey Kong Country mentioned (although with 3D sprites is that 2D enough in art style to be counted?)
The Curse of Monkey Island too (more user friendly than Grim Fandango).
Of course there are some really great 3D games. But 2D gaming was unceromoniously abandoned by p...
Some people have said that they thought that the Xbox360 would fail to sell? Highly unlikely:
Even if the Xbox360 was regarded as Xbox version 1.5 for a time (and still is to some extent) it showed very early on how crisp and colourful HDTV graphics could be. The overall design of the console, the controllers and the whole Xbox brand itself was much improved - it was more delicate looking, less stereotypically brutish. Their advertising became accordingly a bit more subtle or c...
He said 'When going 2D, you need the courage to not be so attached to visual appearance of the games and to really pursue the gameplay experience'
Fair enough maybe and he may have practically invented platform gaming but he did bash Rare's great Donkey Kong Country game as being all mouth and no trousers, something for which he latest apologised. Rare also managed to make a 2D platformer in 1994 that has more detail and subtlety to it, in art design, control and music, than ma...
I wouldn't say that Max Payne 2 was much worse than the first Max Payne game but, on the other hand, I wouldn't say that Max Payne 2 was necessarily better than the first game either.
A great moment in the first game was the restaurant which is set on fire. To me, the equivalent of that in Max Payne 2 was the funhouse which is a great level. Part of what makes it great is that, although you are in a realistic funhouse made possible with the best PC/Xbox graphics at the time, i...
Some other things I'd add, that will be of greater or lesser importance to people, as a British gamer are:
1. The release of the Sega Megadrive. There'd been the NES and the Master System before it but many British gamers had not seen the sense in paying £40 for such games when they could either play inventive Spectrum or Commodore 64 games or, later, graphically superior Amiga games for less money (although the Amiga itself was dearer). But the Sega Megadrive was differe...
I remember when I first read about the Xbox360 and I saw the screenshots of Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. The quality of the visuals and design ethic of Rare was clear to see. Furthermore, Microsoft had improved their own design ethic of the Xbox brand.
I'd say that Rare do have one foot in the past, one in the future (and one in the present!). I understand why they chose to make vehicle creation the centrepiece of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and bolts however it's be great to see a really epic...
I remember these paintings- I like them a lot. They remind me a bit of Ridley Scott's Alien and Bladerunner with a touch of Batman and have a very 1930s industrial feel. A giant whale will always remind me of the great Clanker's Cavern level in Banjo Kazooie as well.
(by the way, the glass ceilings of the artwork, and in the first Bioshock game itself, are not only reminiscent of the art deco period but the conservatories and exhibition halls of the Victorians as well).
Whatever anyone says about this or next year being the year of the PS3, the only upcoming announced games that I am thinking about are Remedy's Alan Wake and ex-Remedy series sequel Max Payne 3. The first, at least, will be on the Xbox 360.
I was thinking about Rare's Perfect Dark 2 (after I'd read that it was being worked on) but then that was cancelled along with Kameo 2 for Microsoft to concentrate their time and money on Project Natal.
This seems to have resu...
