Wiiu sold 25 million almost solely relying on exclusives. So there you have the importance of exclusives. Ofcourse having third party support is also important, but having one without the other just isn't enough.

If exclusives don't matter that much why ms is boasting about non existent exclusives and instead cut off halo, gears and forza to solely focus on providing a platform for third party developers to release their games on?
Simple answer. It would instantly turn xbox' stagnation into commercial suicide!

The problem is microsoft is spending 95% of their energy talking about exclusives while they have very little to back it up. They are always bringing up the discussion about exclusives so it could be more important than you want to admit.

On console! And that is the problem. If gamers really care having the best version of multiplats they are already playing on pc.
Maybe it is just that in the us, there are more loyal fans left from xbox sunnier days. The 360 sold approx 50 million alone in north america, while ps3 only pushed 30 million. Even if it may not be a big lead in favor for ps4 over there right now, we have seen a huge shift in marketshare, with the situation probably becoming more severe by the end of the gen.
Nothing new here and fanboys will adapt it.

There is one single reason that kept and keeps me from switching to a gaming pc instead of going with ps4 - the exclusives. But i never felt the need to game with xbox gamers via crossplay. I won't lie, i would have welcomed bc at the start of the gen to carry over the time with ps3 games until the floodgate of new ps4 games opened. But as of now, i can't even keep pace with the new releases, so there isn't a single thought of playing last gen games in me. B...
Lex there is a difference between rarely requested nice to have features like bc or crossplay with xbox and not being able to offer what in history always has been the bread & butter of a console - the exclusives!
