Well, the story of Bioshock 2 doesn't fit very well with the premise of Bioshock and stinks of serious retcon, and we all kind of knew about Rapture so seeing Rapture more screwed up was not as novel. I think the little sister timed assault-turret defense and then sister fight mechanic kind of bothered a lot of people. On the other hand, the shooting mechanics and bio-power usage got a LOT better, the hacking was better, and the plot made somewhat more sense overall.

This guy is one of the backbones of 3d gaming who messes with this stuff every day, and you're a nobody who doesn't.
And the funny thing is that PS3 doesn't have much more raw (peak) performance and it's generally so much more difficult to access that differential that the enhancement to the output gained isn't good enough to be worth the effort.
That's why designing games as much as possible to favor the engine and palette and using more expensive animation techniques is a better use of the time and money than trying to run the PS3 at peak performance and efficiency.

The worst thing about Gears 2 was the whiplash of the crazy plot where about 2/3's through, you start trying to sink Jacinto instead of save it and the locust start trying to stop you. I thought it was a pretty good game as far as execution goes. Storywise ...it was a real mess, and the Dom drama didn't work out very well either.

The main sacrifice for the consoles was 30 FPS. I think the open world was taken away to keep you from wandering around in empty areas where there was nothing to fight like you did if you went exploring in Crysis. Dunia does open world FPS just fine and it's a less advanced engine.
Open world or Sandbox isn't that big of a deal performance wise. It just loads geometry for surrounding areas and then shows them and spawns enemies when you cross a trip wire point. Often...
