See the problem with your short term theory (the one that supposes Wii Sports sold the Wii by itself) is that Wii Fit sold over 40 mill, Mario Kart sold over 28 million, and New SMB Wii sold 22 mill. as well.
Kinect sold 10 million copies also, and that was AFTER the IPhone went huge. Given these numbers, you're right that quick sales are good, but these huge numbers for multiple titles tell you they kept it going, and its still going into 2011 (its just not OUR sorts of...

Its because something really is lost in between 2D plane level structure and 3D. In 2D its much more about skill and accuracy, through the use of jumping primarily, and that is how a traditional platformer is measured and understood in our minds.
I think this understanding is the main reason why so many 2D games from the 80's era simply don't translate to 3D worlds of today.
