what the guy is doing is actually quite simple and people do it to cheat achievements a lot, but the fact that it is that easy to access in game parameters is uncommon
people have written hack programs for 360 and ps3 both to cheat on line
people load up edited/hacked files through usb flash drives on their ps3 and use hard drive cables on 360

to this day i still struggle to understand the allure of cheating at online games
it is like people must feed their ego, by cheating it makes them feel important or superior
i always thought games were meant to be fun, not make me feel important
a good testament to this is if you look at the eladerboards on any 360 game the top few guys are alwasy clearly glitcher or cheaters and theya re selling either that account or they are selling time to teach you ...
the ads on xbox live are for things offered on the service
for instance you'll never see something just brandishing a company logo, if a company is in an ad it is because they are sponsoring content on xbox live which usually means it is free a good example of this is discovery channel sponsoring the first map pack for gears1
also things like the bestbuy halo themes, ford also has made some cool free content in the past
most of the "ads" are fo...
there is a simple reason it loads on the spotlight section...they want people to see it
if you had a choice nobody would load there and nobody would see the things that they are promoting, or the shows the spend money on producing
if pushing down on the thumbstick a few times is really that inconvenient for you then i feel a little sorry for you

you can decline system updates on 360 as well, you just cant play online
there is a reason for this, 360 updates close holes where people are modding the console and cheating or pirating
mandatory updates preserves the live community by reducing the ways that your experience can be hampered
