I walk away from the PS2 in the early years and towards the xbox. yeah halo and ninja gaiden were so good it made my decision a satisfying one.
Then games stop coming. Lack of 3rd party support and MS studios doing nothing but Halo, i got off gaming completely. 3 years later i bought a PS2 + God of War 1 & 2 + RE4 + GT4 + etc. Greatness delivered by the PS brand, pure and simple. The PS3 owners are not FPS crazy either. That is why there is so much variety of AAA games. Uncharted, LBP, Killzone 2, GT5P(big demo), Heavenly Sword. All of them in different categories delivering the goods. I get a lot of entertainment from my PS3 with more variety. The PS3 is not defined by a specific genre, it is a variety driven console. Works great for me.

consider that it has been 2 years and a few months, a staggering $600 launch price, still the base price is $400 in a world recession, i would say they are in good shape, a price drop will flip this position issue against the competition
the not spectacular sales of the PS franchises has been happening since the PS2 days and Sony has not stop pumping their studios in producing unique games. Many of these great games not sell millions maybe because they appeal to a limited audience, like shadow of the colossus, definitely not of mass audience taste, but for gamers is an instant classic.

Shadow of the Colossus: is only known for those that visit the news sites, when i got it last november i experienced one of the most unique enjoyable game. Unpopular might be, but once you get it is an awesome experience.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Do i need to say more? this game is so amazing that after playing through twice, then played Gears 2, Killzone2, Ninja Gaiden 2 and Sigma, etc i went back to play Uncharted for the 3rd time and was totally impressed...
