For choice of games to play now and for the next 6 months or so yea, Wii U is a good choice now especially the Zelda bundle. I already have one though so it's a PS4 for me next, although I'm waiting for a bundle or a special customized system before I get one.

YOU have the right idea! I've seen numerous artists reimagine the Mario universe in stunningly beautiful and thoughtful ways and I would love to see something along those lines happen. So, video games are art. We've seen that discussion many times and few people on the gaming side of things would argue otherwise. Art is not always pretty, art can strive to make itself disgusting, perverse or present itself in a way that is unsettling to the viewer.
