The app is only to access features like voice chat and lobbies (I think). You don't need the app to play games that don't require online, but you do need to pay to access online, from what I understand. So no, you don't need to pay to play Breath of the Wild.
I could understand why saying it has no games at launch makes sense, even though it has 5 confirmed right now for launch and 5 more coming the same month, but I cannot understand why people say it has no games coming. I personally feel that Nintendo wants to space out their releases throughout the year so that way the Switch is super enticing during the holiday season. They're not banking entirely on the sales in March, which is why they have Splatoon, Arms, Mario Odyssey, etc coming late...
I think it will outsell the Wii U by default. Considering it is both a home and mobile device, it serves 2 markets. If we average the current install base of Wii U and 3DS together (considering that should give an idea of who will buy the Switch), that's about 38 million. Given this number, I think a modest estimate of how much the Switch will sell is at least 30 million.
This actually doesn't bother me at all. We are getting 4 new characters and an all new battle mode, in addition to the already 48 tracks that are in Mario Kart 8. They are more than likely working hard on the next Mario Kart game to come out in 2019, so adding even more here would mean that they have less material to work with for future games. And/or there is a possibility of DLC for MK8 Deluxe and essentially make this a platform style game that just updates over time.
If I'm not mistaken, Rayman Legends, Steep, and Skylanders are also launch titles. There are also a couple of Indie titles that might be launch, but probably not boxed games.
Nintendo gamers have been asking for a more focused Nintendo for a while now, ever since before Wii U came out really. Having both handheld and console development studios under the same roof working on the same hardware will mean a more steady stream of games being released, so it seems like the ideal place for Nintendo to be in right now if they can capitalize on that.
It would actually makes sense if you want to take an online game on the go smoothly. If you're running an online game through LAN, taking it off the dock would most likely lose the connection since it would take a couple of seconds to switch over to wireless Internet. Since an ethernet port would just add to the cost, I feel that it makes sense for them just not to include it.
@superchiller You mean look at all the articles that say Zelda Wii U being canceled is a rumor? Almost all of the articles in that list you linked to either have "rumor" in the title or have a question mark at the end, meaning they don't know if it actually is canceled. Nintendo's website still has BotW listed as a Wii U game, so I'll take the developer's word on this one.

I personally don't think that the Switch needs Zelda at launch. It would definitely be nice, but we still don't know what other games are launch titles. If they have Mario, Slatoon, Mario Kart, Skyrim, ect I don't think Zelda is necessarily needed to fill out that pretty darn amazing launch line-up. Not having Zelda might actually allow Skyrim and other 3rd party games room to breath and actually sell well, especially Skyrim since Zelda is now pretty similar to it. If there are no...
It is true that pretty much every establishment has free wifi these days, but I have always said that the Switch should have 3G Internet in order to support online games everywhere. In the reveal trailer the first guy went out to a park to keep playing Zelda. If he was playing an online game like Titanfall or Overwatch for example, he would not have been able to easily take that game with him to the park. Not being able to effectively play all aspects of a lot of games now a days everywhere y...
In this case I feel it's mostly because Nintendo saw that the Wii U was not going to sell well at all, and eve a price cut was not going to help enough to warrant it. The Wii U was barely being sold at a profit by 2014, so cutting the price even by $50 would have meant that they were making a loss with every console sold. Not enough people would bit even at that price, so taking a loss on every console sold would not have been the best idea. Something they could have done is release a $20...
I think I understand what he is trying to say, but his comment at the end about him being away from the franchise for so long does make his argument less valid. If he has played every generation of Pokemon like I have, he would know that the game's formula of beat all the gyms so you can become the champion all while the villains are shoehorned in there somewhere has gotten a bit stale. I was fine with how it was done all the way up until X and Y, which seemed the most formulaic and admit...
How is not having Zelda at launch a disaster when we don't even know what the rest of the lunch line-up will be? It would be one thing if all we got at launch was a 2D Mario, a tech demo like NintendoLand, and a couple of late ports like the Wii U did. But it is a completely different thing if the Switch launches with a 3D Mario, Splatoon, portable Skyrim, Mario Kart, and all the other 3rd party support games and other ports that have already been confirmed, hinted at, or rumored to be co...
I think people feel like they have to defend Nintendo because there seems to be way more articles dissing Nintendo than praising them. Nearly every day I see at least one opinion piece talking about how much Nintendo doesn't get it or just isn't good, and most of the time the writer hasn't even played a Nintendo game in forever. Not even an hour after the Switch was revealed I saw three articles about how it was doomed just from the 3 minutes commercial that only revealed the basi...
@superchiller My point was that there are way more than just 5 good Wii U games, which is the point I was responding to. I never said that the Wii U had the biggest lineup of games, but every game I listed (as far as I know) has a 75 or higher (with a lot of those being higher than 85), and the ones that are below 80 are 2nd and 3rd party exclusives. So saying that there aren't any games that are good and fun to play on the Wii U just isn't true.
Splatoon, New Super Mario Bros U, Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pokken, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Hyrule Warriors, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Mario Maker are all amazing games. I could even keep going, but I think I've made my point.
The touchscreen wouldn't just help with games. The operating system of the Wii U is one of the easiest to used and streamlined that I have every used because you can easily type and operate menus by using the touch screen. They can easily use it in some games too, but having the ease of operation on the go will be very convenient.
Price: $399 (not ideal, but that is still competitive and should be pretty profitable)
Specs: more powerful than PS4, maybe Pro. ARM architecture, 1080p/60fps max, HDR capable
Launch Games: Zelda, some 2D Mario, Pokemon remake (I have a strong feeling that Yellow will be remade for some reason, if not Sun and Moon), Pikmin 4, Smash rerelease, Dragon Quest games, some Final Fantasy game, Beyond Good and Evil in 2018
Features: Basic Xbox...
Do people just forget that Nintendo has handhelds, along with other avenues for revenue, too? Saying that Nintendo hasn't had a winner since the Wii simply isn't true, and also is a logical fallacy if only looking at consoles. The 3DS easy outsold the PSVita and has made Nintendo a butt load of money off of both software and hardware. Amiibo, like them or not, is still making them a bunch of money, along with the money they are still getting from Pokemon Go (though that is lessening e...
@KingCosmic
I wasn't defending the app. I thought you were confused since you asked if you need the app to play Zelda, which you don't. I think that payed online could have been executed better, I really don't understand the app thing, but I can rationalize why Nintendo is making us pay. They had to have been losing money overall off their online servers, so making us pay for it is nothing more than a business decision. It also should allow Nintendo to offer better online...
