Photo realism does not mesh well with the artstyle Mario games are associated with.
Too much detail would take away from the whimsy and charm of these beloved characters. That's like Warner Bros or Disney making Photo realistic versions of Silly Symphonies or Looney Toons.
It would be awkward as fuck to watch and most people would hate it.

Nah. I think they may be backwards compatibility via digital titles. Too many people skipped the Wii U and if this thing blows up , you can bet your bottom dollar we will have re-releases of all those Wii U titles
